So by my count, this is a full roster if either Hutch stays or Jackson gets a scholarship. If neither of those things happen there is still an open spot.

The other big question is Ketner going to return after playing football? If he does, could he use a football scholarship instead of a basketball scholarship? If either of those things happen there could be another spot as well.

Seems like there could be anywhere from 0 to 2 open slots left.

While I love rooting for a low/mid major team, I do wish there was more local media coverage and more communication from the program giving us info and stuff to follow.

On the MBB Instagram account and the website signed a transfer from Hofstra:

    https://ualbanysports.com/news/2023/4/25/mens-basketball-mens-basketball-signs-amar-e-marshall.aspx

    No mention of Sebastian.....

We spoke about Amare a week or so ago. I think this announcement is because of the official signing. Sebastian is just verbal at the moment.

Not to beat a dead horse, but Hutch and Amica are the last two connections to Will Brown. One of our complaints about the DK era is the lack of All-Academic team players. Let's see what next year brings.

    Congrats Hutch! Great honor!!

  4. We needed some form of a coaching change anyway. I met Jordan once and he seemed like a good dude, but we honestly needed to add a real X's and O's guy on the bench anyway. UA only has so much budget, so they can't go around adding bodies without someone leaving.

Best of luck to him at Temple. Let's hope this is an opportunity for the team to bring in an assistant that can help. Would love to see a hot shot young guy looking to break into the college game or a JUCO/ D3/ even High School guy that needs an in, but has an innovative playbook or offensive/defensive scheme to employ. I know the team didn't have a true point guard with the injuries, but it didn't feel like the team had a real game plan that maximized their talent. Actually if they went that route, they might even be able to hire two as I'm sure they could be had cheaper or even part time.

Neither Jackson or Ketner should get a scholarship. Ketner should be the last big off the bench if he's even on the team. Hopefully he moves over to football. Jackson on a good team is an 8 or 9th guy in the rotation. Maybe Jackson turns into a solid rotation player as an upper-classman. Good kid tries very hard but there's a reason he's a PWO.

I know he was forced into it, but kid started almost every conference game, and showed more hustle than almost any player I've seen in years of following the team. If he will stay with the team as a PWO, then that is awesome, but I like the energy he brings, and I've give him a ship before watching him transfer somewhere. He just watched his brother win a national championship, and I am sure he is motivated to improve and play on a tournament bound team. Hopefully he can achieve that here.

  6. Anyone know if Hutch is coming back for his last year of eligibility? Anyone know if Jackson is returning and if he is getting a scholarship? Anyone know if Ketner is returning to the team, or just moving to Football full-time?

Those questions will determine if the team is set for next year, or if we have two more scholarships remaining.

Returning Scholarships: Beagle, Neely, Little, Amica, Reddish

    Incoming Freshman: Robinson, Adnan, Margoupis

    Incoming Transfers: Betram, Marshall

    That's 10 Scholarships of 13 maximum

    Questions:

    • Jackson - did he get a scholarship or will he continue as a PWO?
    • Ketner - Returning to the Basketball team after playing football?
    • Hutchinson - Graduating with a year of eligibility remaining. Haven't seen his name entering into the portal
  7. Looks like he played a bunch early in the season then his role diminished as the season went on. That is what concerns me the most. YouTube shows a bunch of videos about how talented of a scorer he is. That's all well and good, but we had that in Davis this year. Can he play D? What happened for him to fall out of the rotation at Hofstra. A team in a league that's higher, but not much higher. Top AE teams can compete in the CAA every year, the difference there is the #8 team in the CAA might be #3 in the AE. Did he get hurt? Couldn't get the program they run? Didn't play D?

From what I see, this is another high ceiling athlete being added to the team, which is awesome and I love it, but I agree with Dane96. We need a real PG. Not necessarily a scorer, but one that makes everyone around them better.

I like the front court with Beagle, Neely, Robinson, and Margoupis. Yes, another big banger would be nice, but not needed as much as someone who will lead the team on the floor.

No offense to Amica, Little, or Jackson intended with this. Any of those three could be that guy, but injury history and some other items have led us to not be confident that they are the player for that role yet.

  8. I can't fault the kid for looking at whats out there, but I am excited to have him back for at least another season. From what I have seen online, he was getting interest from some big schools, but he didn't have close to the buzz about him that both Nichols and Cremo had. I said it a few times here already - him returning for one more year (or hopefully two) will probably end up being the best move for him. ROY in the AE is great and all, but if his dream is to be highly recruited by an ACC type team, and listed in the articles about the "top transfer talents" then having a year on the conference first team and maybe a CPOY will open up a huge new world of opportunities for him.

Maybe he can talk to Nigle Cook and get him to come and join him :)

    Awesome news.

He's not a floor general, in the slightest.  I remember him well.

Oh well. Guess I was hoping that Bing's reputation for being good academically would transfer to the court, but obviously thats not an assumption I should make.

I have no memory of him at all beyond the name. He did score 21 against UA going 5 for 7 from three in February 2022, and in his only other game against UA he scored 11 (3 for 4 from three). That's probably why I remember the name.

  10. This team was flawed, but I wouldn't say it was every way imaginable. While many on the board disagree, I think they were physically talented enough, and when you look at the roster construction, it wasn't even as poorly constructed as many (including me) have said. The more I look back at the season, and think about how the games went, the team lacked high basketball IQ and leadership. Someone you knew would make the right play at the right time. Drumgoole was the defacto leader, and he is a talented scorer, but I am not sure he was a court general. Beagle is beyond gifted, but as a freshman he wasn't a leader. None of the point guards that played were that guy. I think I expected Little to be that guy, as he was valedictorian of his high school (if I remember correctly).

This goes back to having no one on the all-academic team, which we always did under Brown. This was a team of athletes, not high IQ guys. All of them good in their own way and talented, but they needed that leader. You don't have to be academically gifted to be that guy, but it certainly helps. Being academically gifted doesn't make you that guy, but it certainly helps.

I don't remember much of Bertram in his time at Bing, and no his stats don't scream big addition, but can he be a floor general? His in conference stats in the AE were pretty decent averaging double figures in points and shooting pretty well from three (37.9% and 38.5%).

No he isn't a program savior, but he might be what the team needs. Well part of what the team needs, because we still need a lot more lol.

  11. So it looks like this is where we stand as of today for next season:

    Returning Players:

    • PG - 2 Scholarships Used (potentially 3 if Jackson gets one)
      • Amica - 3 Injury Plagues Seasons. Can he still play?
      • Little - Showed Electric Skills on play, then looked lost on the next. Injured almost all of 22/23
      • Jackson - Was a walk-on. I thought he did great last year as a freshman being thrown into as many minutes as he had to play. I'm excited to see him year 2 if he stays. His big bro just won a Chip at UConn
    • SG - 0 Scholarships Used
      • NONE
    • Wing / SF - 2 Scholarships Used
      • Justin Neely - Injured this Season, AEROY in 21/22
      • Aaron Reddish - So much raw talent, better stats than he got credit for, extremely inconsistent
    • PF - ??? Scholarships used. Probably 1, but could be 2 - maybe 0
      • Trey Hutcheson - Graduated, probably leaving or entering the portal, could return. I haven't seen any news on him yet
      • Tairi Ketner - Lost all his playing time. Looks good at times and is a big body, but definitely is a role player at best. Will be playing UA Football this year, who knows if he returns to the court.
    • Center - 0 Scholarships Used
      • None

So by my count, the team is currently using as few as 4 scholarships, potentially as many as 7 with the status of Ketner, Hutcheson, and Jackson unknown. With a total of 13 possible, that means the team needs somewhere between 6 and 9 players to be added to the team for next season.

    Signed Recruits - 3 Scholarships

    • Zane Adnan - PG
    • Jack Margoupis - SF
    • Cornelius Robinson - SF

Assuming those 3 do still end up attending and joining the team, that leaves between 3 and 6 more spots to fill.

Players in the Portal, but could return (not committed elsewhere yet)

    • Jonathon Beagle - He is my #1 recruit for the program to focus on. Convince him 1 more year of seasoning in the AE will get him a bigger and better offer next off-season. He should stay and open the renovated arena as a star!
    • Malik Edmead - He is fun to watch and has amazing speed and footwork, but he just didn't fit in the style that DK employed. He was terrible shooting - both from the floor and the line. I think he will improve, but I think him going to a lower league would help him. No need to recruit him to stay
    • Japannah Kellogg - Didn't get as much play as he should have considering how bad the team was, so that has to say a lot about what the staff thought of his ability. It always hurts losing a big body, and he did have a few real great games at the end of the season, but at the end of the day - the team should be able to easily replace him in the portal, so no rush to recruit him back

Wow. Didn't put 2 and 2 together on how bleak the roster situation is for the team at the moment. That isn't really a bad thing, as the team didn't make the AE playoffs this year, so blowing the team up and starting mostly scratch was probably needed anyway.

Team needs at least 2 "Bigs" and a ball handler from the portal with the first 3 spots. Then realize there could be 1-3 more still to fill after that depending on the status of Jackson, Hutch, and Ketner.

Damn. Lots of work for this staff to do. Looks like another year of no playoffs at the moment.

  12. I think all of us expected Beagle to bolt for a bigger school before his college days were gone. I think we all just assumed we would get more than 1 year. We never really got to see what he will be. I say good for him for trying to go as big as he can. I would have advised him to stay at UA for at least 1 more year and get an all-conference honor on his resume, maybe even a CPOY. That said, the team was so bad this year, I am sure the pain of losing so much cuts deep. I still have hopes in the back of my mind that his goals are P5 conference and a top 25, if not a top 10 type contending school. I do not think those schools are after him yet. When he find out his best offers are from the second tier of schools, maybe he decides to come back for one more year to get those awards and get his stock to rise to that level. I think the rule now is transfer once without sitting out, but you need to sit out a year with a second transfer (I could be wrong on that). If the top of the top doesn't come offering, he could decide to stay put for a year 2.

People keep bringing up the Cremo and Nichols transfers: Those were different: both got degrees after giving us 3 years before the bolted. That was a different world then though. The portal hadn't heated up to what it is today at that point.

Win...Brown didn't win, Gattuso has been stealing money for a decade...a decade of sucking at football and you're worried the fans are too mean? When this program led by losers does something that warrants praise, they will get it. I will not lay off them!

I never said praise. I'm in the fire Gattuso camp, and I said to give DK three years before calling for his head. I cancelled season tickets, I express disatisfaction when appropriate. Us fans have every right to be angry and disillusioned. I'd question the sanity of any fan that isn't pissed off.

There is a difference between being pissed off and expressing anger and being outright mean and negative in a place that recruits read.

Maybe those doing the recruiting should say: look how pissed off our fanbase is. They are rabid a$$holes when we suck, but when we win they love you forever. Look at the love Hooley gets more than half a decade after he left school. You, Mr. Recruit, are talented and will be a star. These angry fans will fall in love and the NIL money will follow.

I don't know. I'm in sales in the real world, and recruiting is nothing more than sales. If we scare away all the potential players, then the dark circle of losing continues. The team gets worse, the losing continues, the fans get worse, the losing continues....

We need to be angry as #uc& and express that anger, but also be two faced and put on purple and gold #purplefam glasses on social media. Maybe it doesn't help, but it also can't hurt.

  14. Please don't take what I said the wrong way. I was clear that there are issues that need to be fixed. Our complaints are warranted and I am as pissed off as anyone. My interest has faded. I didn't renew my football seats last season, and I loved where I sat. I kept basketball tix because I am addicted, but haven't made a GDAC donation yet for this season. I feel I have to make one to help ensure I get a decent shot at getting seats similar to where I am now in the renovated arena, but when/if I do make one, it will be under protest. I haven't felt this much shame over our athletics since before we went D1.

My post was in reference to the silence on social media from the athletic department. Every post they make has trolls commenting on it, especially the "Fire DK," "Fire Gattuso," and "Luke Matters" guys. I have to assume that the school decided to just stop posting, as that stuff is extremely visible to the public and recruits and there is no good way to block the trolls. Obviously a quick google search will bring up the issues. Any recruit with a shred of intelligence is going to be looking everywhere they can before the choose a school and the stuff will come out, but I'd rather they have a better first impression, then uncover the issues when they dig deeper. Hopefully the recruiting staff has prepared them for what they will find at that point, and can use the: "You will be a big centerpiece in helping to turn everything around" type talking point to overcome all us fans pointing out how bad all the players are and how we don't think they are D1 material (even if they really aren't D1 material).  Every school and program has their trolls, but most of the big schools have longer traditions or bigger boosters and positive fans to balance it out. We have alienated pretty much all of our stupidly tiny fanbase. Still blows my mind how big of a school we have, but how apathetic the students and alumni are. The only way to fix that is through more consistent winning.

My suggestions was merely that we, as fans, try to help recruiting with positive comments or at least no comments instead of negative ones when there are social media posts in the most public of places - namely instagram and twitter. Bring back the #purplefam narrative for our kids. A lot needs to change here, and it starts at the top, but being a little smarter about where we share those thoughts could help. Or maybe it does nothing, but it has to be better than the constant negativity and bitc&ing.

  15. Every now and then a recruit or someone posting about a recruit mentioned that they have heard from Albany. I can't point to specifics, but if you look at the America East forum there are a few examples mentioned there. So we are recruiting, it just seems to be silence from the staff and program.

Have to imagine that its on purpose. Either as @cwdickens mentions above that another shoe will drop soon, or maybe its because our fanbase is so disillusioned right now that any post they make gets slammed with negativity about firing DK or firing Benson and Cegles. Not posting removes some of the visible on-line negativity when prospective recruits are doing their own research in trying to figure out what school to attend or transfer to.

My bet is the second option. If I was a potential recruit and all I saw was fan negativity about the players, coach, administration, and program then I would take a pause before considering going to that school.

While we as fans have SO MUCH to be negative about for GOOD REASON, maybe its time to try and exude some positive thoughts and posts. Try to help sell the school and program as a place that players would be accepted and followed? We need to still be negative and point out the things that need to change, and change quickly, but we also need to make this a place those players want to come to. That is on us as fans and supporters as much as it is the program. Maybe we can't make 6-7 figure donations to the program, but we can help make the place look like its good for the talent. Maybe I am wrong, but could it hurt?

If Beagle goes to LCC, you can add Havidan to the list of who needs to go.

He isn't going to LCC. Why lose in the MAAC when you can lose in the AE?

If I was a betting man, and I am, I think the payout odds are close to:

EVEN: he ends up at a major program, top 5/6 league, guessing Syracuse with their rebuild. Contribute right away, maybe as a 6th man, but star in year 2 or 3 (this is the dream almost every kid has)

-120: in leagues 6-10 ... somewhere like the Pac-12 or CUSA. Start right away, but star in year 2 (this is most likely)

+140: somewhere in the next tier, 10-15, where he can be all-conference right a way. A place like the A10. (This is probably his best move short term)

+500: Tests the waters, but is convinced to stay at UA for one more season to play with Neely and cast and show he can win anywhere he plays (this might be his best move long term)

+1000: Decides to go pro right away and goes to Europe or the GLeague to get better against the best (this is ridiculous, but I bet its more likely than $iena)

+5000: goes to another low major conference team, like Siena, UVM, or other. (UA should fire everyone and solve any remaining title ix issues by removing MBB as an offered sport if this happens)

Cornelius has a much better shot at being the best rookie out of this group and it's not close IMO. And yeah, this totally negates it, freshman don't win, young teams don't win, hasn't that been made abundantly clear last two years especially this year? This is a 300+ ranked team again next year, unless they bring in 3 all AE type kids.

It doesn't matter who is better and who is more likely to win. The point is  adding 2 all-rookie caliber players each year for multiple years in a row creates a winner in year 3 or year 4. Especially with the portal to fill positional needs. Losing one of those players sets the program back a year, probably two years of the one you lose is the freshman like in this case. Next year should have been a middle to the top of the league finish with 2 more strong rookies to add to the last 4, with the following year being favorites for the league with 6 plus whatever was brought in.

Then while you lose the grad transfers in Beagle and Neely after year 4 for their year to shine in the ACCtype league to prep for the pros, the team has the new crop to fill in. IMHO, that's how you get to long term success in mid-majors today.

I believe this all comes back to the uncertainty of Killings future. No reason to stay and win here if you question the direction of the program and who will be leading you the following season.
