  1. Looks like Beagle has the ROY locked up. What other players have a chance at awards for the season?

    Men:

    ROY: Beagle

All-Rookie Team: Beagle obviously. I think Jackson has a shot after starting all conference season (minus Senior night)

1-3rd teams: Beagle and Drumgoole probably have a shot at third team. Not sure anyone else has a shot.

    POY/DPOY/COY no one on UA

    Woman:

I haven't watched enough. Anyone have predictions?

  2. Team played well today. Patel with another big game. He is either on fire or just off. Either way, I love his hustle.

Jackson played extremely well as well. I like his how game is developing.

Gotta watch the replay on ESPN when I have a moment. I thought that attempted dunk went through the hoop and that play should have been and one.

Absolutely hate it when teams try to run down the clock when up 13-15 with 6-7 minutes left like UA did tonight. It always ends up with a forced shot at the buzzer. Team needs to keep playing their game. I'd rather a team get a good look with 10-15 seconds left on the shot clock then a forced shot at the end of the clock. Always seems to end in a miss or a turnover and allows the other team to claw back. Maybe with under 3 minutes to go that's the move, but with 6 minutes left it never works. I don't think they ever let it get back into single digits late, but they were up 20 at one point.

Now off to Vermont where they will attempt to do the impossible... Win at Patrick in two straight games in under a week.

  3. So guess it is senior night now. The conversation started because there was no mention of it being senior night before.

Happy to have watched them all play.

To the two with eligibility left: would love to root for you for another season. Win or lose, you are all still #purplefam to me. Even if you move on to try your hand elsewhere. No matter what happens: good luck in the real world.

Wasn't me.  I think Drumgoole comes back.

Just went back amd found it in the recruiting thread. Forgot you went back and edited and said that you were wrong on Drumgoole and Hutch. Assumed Trey would be gone, but had forgotten Drumgooles red shirt.  My fault for having selective memory lol.

Not a big deal. I shouldn't have called you out on it. It doesn't really matter where stuff comes from when it's fans all guessing on the future and hoping for the best for our team.

I hope that we win this NJIT game, and beat UVM to sneak into the playoffs, but even if that happens I doubt we beat UVM twice in a row, so it might actually be best for the future of the program if NJIT beats us, the UVM game is meaningless (beyond my JOKE of having bragging rights of being one of the only teams in the country ending the season on a win), and the off season can begin.

Having an extra week or two of rest for the players and to start the business of preparing for next season might be good. So many questions. What happens with DK and the lawsuit. Who stays and who leaves will be directly related to that. It wouldn't surprise me for a second if 100% of the team enters the portal. Even the players with no intention of leaving. If it were me, I'd do it with the caveat stating that I don't want to leave but I need to explore my options until the status of the coaching staff and athletic department are settled.

Either way, even the most negative of us on this board still want the best for the future of #purplefam and the program, even if we have differing opinions of what needs to happen to get there.

    This is correct.

2 graduating and/or out of eligibility (Patel/Davis) plus an open spot when Shafer Left = 3 open scholarships for next year

    • 3 commits in Robinson, Margoupis, Adnan
    • 1 Walk-on that deserves a scholarship, but could already be on a "ship" do to financial aid and NYS State School programs

So the team is already basically set for next year, until transfer season begins. Biggest questions in my mind:

    • Do Drumgoole and Hutch return for their last year of eligibility even if they graduate? Someone on this board told me earlier in the year that they were both done after the season (May have been Dane96, but I could be misremembering)
    • What happens with Amica after 3 lost injury seasons
    • Does Ketner stay after not seeing the floor in weeks?
    • Does Marcus Jackson try to get a Scholarship and enter the portal if not offered by UA already?
    • What will become of Little and Neely after missing the year with injuries? Will they recover well?
    • Does Reddish look to transfer? His brother was traded out west. His time has seemed to be in flux.

I believe that we will win this game against NJIT, but fail to make the playoffs after losing to UVM in the final game. I think we will start learning the answers to some of those questions within minutes of the final buzzer in Burlington.

Looked at Hutch's bio, he has played the previous three seasons and listed as a senior, unless I am missing something he is done and for Patel, his bio only mentions his last season at Cornell and this season at UAlbany.

Even if both have eligibility, is there any motivation to return next season?

Everything surrounding this team has become surreal, even when it comes to "celebrating" the last home game of the season.  Perhaps a wake at the Bryce Funeral Home, Pawling Ave, Troy would be appropriate.

Hutch received an additional year of eligibility with COVID (as did all players) - This is his 4th year, but he still has one left. Drumgoole is the same situation.  Could be seniors scholastically, but are juniors scholarshipwise.

Davis and Patel have none left that I am aware of.

  7. Interesting with no senior night. Davis and Patel are the only real Seniors, so I guess it makes sense with those 2 being grad transfer 1 year only players.

Have to imagine that even though Hutch and Drumgoole are only Juniors eligibility wise, this is probably both of their last years. I'd love to celebrate Hutch's time in purple and gold. It had ups and downs, but he earned our praise through his toughness and grit. Drumgoole has only really had 1 year thanks to injuries, but was really the centerpiece of this year's team. His analytics aren't great, but my guess is that's from forcing too much and needing to carry the team. The numbers are down because of a few cold games, remove those and his numbers are incredible. I'd love them both back.

Maybe no senior night means they are both returning?

  8. Looks like the story is getting international attention, with UAlbany mentioned in some of the stories. There are dozens of news organizations that have taken it up. Here are two:

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/college-basketball/article-11763283/Camden-high-school-basketball-player-PUNCHES-rival-mid-game-sparking-massive-court-brawl.html

    https://www.inquirer.com/high-school-sports/new-jersey/camden-dj-wagner-eastside-basketball-altercation-20230216.html

Tons of other articles, but nothing talks about what happened in the lead up. I really doubt that any player, especially one with a college scholarship to play D1 basketball, whether it be to Kentucky or UAlbany would be dumb enough to punch another player in the middle of a game without some sort of backstory.

No matter what the backstory is, it's unacceptable for it to happen on the court. Tensions can run high, and yes players have a right to defend themselves, but I hope there is a really good explanation for what happened. The absence of an acceptable backstory should result in UA having an additional scholarship opening up now.

Kid looks talented, and someone I was looking forward to watching develop. While I like players that stand up for themselves and play rough with an edge, not sure I could root for someone that would lose their cool on the floor on physically assault another player. Ironic coming from me, who has defended Killings locker room behavior if the incident played out the way I understand it. Not to rehash the other threads, but I'm ok with physicality and pushing and things to fire you up, but I'm not OK with a punch or intentionally injuring someone. I'm ok with Jackson guiding Sullivan into a hard foul because of his trash talk, but I'm not OK with a punch to the face.

No idea what backstory could possibly justify it. Not sure anything could justify it. But I hope there is something I'm not thinking about.

  9. I'm not going anywhere close to that far as saying thugs. Some of the Ts and other issues this year weren't nearly as bad as you make them seem. Refs are calling a T this season for stuff that has been a normal part of the game for years. Hutch got a T for saying a play was "all ball". Apparently you can't ever question an official on the floor without a T. "Words" after dunking on someone is part of the game. I think Ts are up all over college ball.

I saw some other footage of this event and it does look like the kid setting the screen seems to be trying to hit Robinson first right before the punch. There is another video from this game that shows a lot of bad blood and physicality throughout the entire game (then the video glitches and cuts out the 18 seconds I posted in the thread.

Definitely going to need to do some interviews and intense investigation into the event before we want this representing UA.

  10. With this season all but over, I wanted to check in to see how the 3 freshman recruits for next year were doing. Checked out Robinson first... Not looking good. I have no idea what led up to the melee, so this could have been something that was building up and him just responding or it being part of something bigger, but here it appears he punches a guy setting a screen in the face. Hope this incident isn't as bad as it seems. He had some pretty good offers. Based on this it seems he was a better fit for his offer from Bryant, but I am only basing this on the 18 second clip.

Danes aren't going to beat Vermont, but if they finish with all wins while NJIT finishes with all losses, Danes would be 1-1 vs Vermont while NJIT is 0-2 I think

NJIT has 4 games left including today. Pretty good chance they go 0-4, but might go 2-2 (winnable against us and NH)

We aren't beating UVM, but if we don't, then no playoffs. Finishing 1-1 with the last 2 games isn't enough. The Fat lady is definitely doing her "me may ma mo moos" and scales to warm up her singing voice.

UA losses + NJIT wins must equal 0 over the remainder of the season or the team streams the first round of the playoffs from their dorm rooms.

Edit: just realized what you are saying. The win vs. UVM would be the tie breaker, not the UML win. Thanks, wasn't thinking about that when I posted originally.

  12. Got down big early and just couldn't complete the comeback. Davis with a crazy second half hitting everything including a further than half court buzzer beater to make the final score only a 2 point loss. Pivotal turnover with about 10 seconds left down by 3 was the end of the comeback opportunity.

Fat lady hasn't sung yet, but the magic number for elimination is now 1.

UA needs to beat NJIT at home next Sat, and Vermont at Vermont on the 28th. NJIT needs to lose their final 4. Tonight at home vs. Vermont, Bryant at home on Wednesday, at UA on Sat, and @ NH next week.

UA finishing 2-0 and NJIT going 0-4 would result in a tie in the standings. Head to head split, both teams were swept by Bing, both teams split with UMBC, both teams swept by UVM and Bryant, UA's win against UML would be the tie breaker.

Chances are pretty extremely low since UA beating UVM is probably not going to happen, but I can definitely see NJIT losing the next 4.

  13. Good win. Looked very similar to the UML game. Get hot and make shots, win. Force too many from the outside when they aren't falling and lose.

This is a team of players with talent that can play with every team they have faced. The team is poorly constructed though, and appear to not be well coached so the whole is way less than the sum of the parts.

With NJIT losing the magic number for elimination doesn't change. Still almost no chance of a playoff birth, but they are alive for at least 1 more game.

Been in hype circles at multiple levels...multiple sports.  Don't gaslight people.  That's not how they go.  Open or closed hands to the face are not how they roll.

That said, none of us know the truth or what the investigation revealed...and that should be the ultimate barometer...that I will agree with you on.

Agreed that slaps to the face aren't part of that. Pushing and shoving are. The slap to the face is what has been accused by Luke, but that has not been admitted by the team or in any of the statements I have seen.

And yes, the performance of the team is definitely an embarrassment. No idea what adding another ball handler or two and a competent big to compliment Beagle would do to the record.

  15. A UA loss here all but officially eliminates the team from a playoff spot and gives the team a few extra weeks of off-season.

I think the math works this way:

UA has 1 league win, Maine and NJIT both have 4. Team has 4 games remaining, so win them all and they can get to 5 wins. Maine and NJIT have already played against each other twice, so it is possible for them both to lose out for the rest of the season.

UA plays both teams one more time, so in that way there is some control of their own destiny.

If UA loses 2 of the 4 remaining games, the season is over.

If UA wins 3 of the 4, and both Maine and NJIT lose out, I think UA would actually win the tie breaker against NJIT because of the UML win, but would lose it to Maine because of Maine's win over Bing (tie breakers would change as the standings changed, so this could be wrong.)

NJIT and Maine can guarantee their own spot in the playoffs with any combo of their wins and UA losses totalling 2.

Technically UA could actually finish with a 7 seed, but at this point the most likely end to the season will be finishing with a single league win and watching all the playoffs on TV from the dorms and players deciding if they will be entering the portal in February instead of waiting till March.

I have many friends in the D1 coaching committee along with administrators.  If GD99 or dyslank think people are not talking about the UA hoops program and the overall athletic department in a negative light, well...you just don't understand what is really going on out there.

No one said this situation isn't shining a negative light on the program. It most definitely is, but what I care about are facts. Items we don't have at the moment, and may never have. It's unfortunate that it came to what it did. It doesn't change that in the absence of real facts, rushing to judgement to defend one side or the other gives you the potential to have egg on your face, just like the whole school did after the CDTA incident.

You'd be mad if a coach didn't shove your son? Wtf is wrong with you? You've got some serious issues, dude

My first question is what he did to deserve it. Actions have consequences.

If it's in the context of hyping up a team in a locker room hype circle? With him yelling at the players telling them to play angry and to get mad and bring out some adrenaline?  No I have no issue with that. It's what coaches do.

If it was physical abuse as punishment for something else, a punch or a slap singled out, or to humiliate him in front of teammates, that's a different story. In that case I go after the coach either physically or legally.

That's the whole question with this entire situation. What was the context. What really happened. The version in the papers is that it was in the pregame hype circle. That's what I believe until I hear otherwise.

I know some of you are against contact in the hype circle. That's what I am arguing against. I'm guessing you never played on or coached a team that didn't give participation trophies and actually tried to compete and win. It almost feels like you want to use this situation to end DKs career regardless of the whole story.

  19. Something did happen. DK admitted it. If it is the way I choose to interpret what has been released so far, I don't even think it should have been reported. As I have stated numerous times, the "incidental contact" is and SHOULD be normal locker room behavior for a group of adults playing a contact sport and going to battle as a team. It became an issue because the player's parents complained. UA's policy states that there should be zero contact, and that it should have been reported. The zero contact policy is geared towards professors in a classroom, not a coach in a locker room or on the field/court. I have seen coaches slap a player on the back after coming off the field/court numerous times - both for positive and negative reasons. High fives after a great play. Hugs after wins.  A coach slapping a players helmet after a dumb move. Technically per UA policy, each of these items should be reported and dealt with. None are ever reported. Its dumb, but it is what it is. When the parent complained to administration, the policy had to have some action taken. According to the investigation, it wasn't bad enough to fire, but they had to give some punishment under the policy to appease HR. Thus the suspension.

    • Was it bad enough to dismiss? Did they only not dismiss because of pressure from community leaders and reasons of race? We do not know. There is not enough actual factual information released to public to know for sure at this point. This is why some of us choose to stay with innocent until proven guilty.
    • Was the suspension handled poorly? Definitely.
    • Is it a bad look for the Athletic Department? 100% at the moment. More transparency would help, but since they are silent, it makes them appear guilty.
    • Should DK be fired over it? Need more information. As it has been presented so far, I say a resounding no. Others disagree.
    • Should Benson be fired over it? There are lots of reasons to want Benson gone. Not sure if this is one of them yet. I will say no if this was him protecting an employee that was being railroaded over an incident that is normal and part of being on an athletic team. If the situation was worse than has been presented so far, then yes it should be both Benson and Killings on their way to the unemployment line - along with anyone else involved in a cover up.

This is my last comment on the subject (I hope) until more info comes out or something major happens, but I will maintain - incidental contact in a hype circle is normal. A coach getting in players faces and yelling, and even shoving to get adrenaline up is normal and perfectly OK. In this environment, a player might get pushed, and might hit the locker. I have absolutely no problem with this - even if it was my son. I would be mad at a coach that didn't do these things. It is his job to fire up the players and get the most out of them.

Singling a player out and slapping across the face or punching them is not ok. Embarrassing them individually in front of their peers is not ok.

DK has admitted to the first example, and this is what all of the reports say happened. Luke is accusing him of the latter and this is why he is suing. I choose to believe that it was the normal locker room hype circle, and the story Luke is telling is embellished because he didn't get his trophy or scholarship. Until we hear otherwise, I will support our coach with what he admitted to. Let's wait for the video of what actually happened on that CDTA bus before holding protests.

Except it wouldn't be a silver lining.

As far as the topic at hand.

I know a couple of things.

    1) The actions were bad enough to warrant a 5 game suspension.

2)The way the suspension was handled was ridiculous. A 5 game suspension announced the off-season would generally mean the first 5 regular season games. Not let's add 2 exhibition games to the schedule instead of the normal closed scrimmages and count those for the suspension and then skip LCC from the suspension just because and end up with regular season games 1,2 and 4.

Certainly this administration has earned no benefit of the doubt here. We will see how the case proceeds and if anything changes perception.

Again, the silver lining thing is a joke. Funny to be able to say we were one of 6 teams to end on a win. It's a JOKE to passive aggressively make fun of a loser team.

On the other points you make:

    1. This means nothing. The school has a zero contact policy so some punishment had to happen. The fact that he wasn't fired implies one of two things:

    A. That the contact was normal hype circle stuff and not intentional harm, and as I have maintained: normal and accepted locker room behavior. Not a criminal assault.

    Or:

    B. It was worse and the school just bowed to community pressure.

I choose to believe A until some real information comes out that states otherwise. See bus incident mentioned above. Let's get to the bottom of the real story before passing judgement.

    2. Agreed that was a terrible decision and crazy. This is a reason to fire Benson, not Killings. Unless of course A was the answer above, then the suspension was BS in the first place and was just something that had to happen to appease HR. Either way the handling of the suspension was terrible and shouldn't have been allowed to play out this way.

At the end of the day, my position is that none of us know what really happened. In the absence of real evidence and first hand accounts, I go with the story that has been presented, which I have no problem with. When more info comes out and some first hand accounts become public, my opinion can change quickly. Innocent until proven guilty. Defended from a kid that has an axe to grind because he wasn't getting a scholarship. Killings admitted that contact happened. This honesty buys credibility that it was hype circle contact and not singled out assault.
