Its always funny when we have -20° weather and snow for 2 weeks and nobody hears a thing, suddenly someplace like Denver gets 0° and a little snow and it national news about a major winter storm.

1/4" in Washington DC and the city shuts down with accidents and emergency services

20" in Albany and the Schools are delayed 2 hours and your boss gets upset with you for being an hour late for work - because you had to snowblow your driveway an additional time before you could force your way through the bank the snowplow left.

This is a pretty big similarity between our markets. Weather won't affect the Cats and also wont effect the Danes.

From my understanding , the field has been plowed and the team is practicing outdoors. Playing in the 40 degree heat in Bozeman will be tropical for us!

Howdy Albany fans!  MSU fan here.  I know there are a fair amount of us hoping to register here to post, but not a single one of us has been successful (which means any Albany fans trying to register likely can't either).

Certainly some fans are taking this game too lightly but many of us certainly aren't.  People are still riding high after the 48-14 dismantling of our rival Montana who also happened to be the #3 team in the country at the time, but I'll be the first to tell you we could play that game 100 times and never win by that big of margin again, it was a perfect storm.

There are a lot of intriguing matchups in this game.  I'm very curious to see how a team who has no familiarity with how MSU's offense operates decides to defend it. It is extremely unconventional in that it has elements of literally every running scheme you can think of. At the very least defensive coordinators have to spend a ton of time creating a game plan because we essentially run multiple offenses.  What MSU does on offense is basically take the first quarter or even into the 2nd to feel you out and then start adjusting to where it thinks it can take advantage, and lean our on defense to keep the game close until the offense figures it out.  If MSU's gameplan works right out of the gate that's where you've seen MSU put up 3+ touchdowns in the first half and if MSU has a 2 score lead at halftime it is going to be extremely difficult for any team to come back as MSU will literally abandon the pass and run for 4 yards a carry until the defense gives up.  MSU was beating UM 31-14 at half and won 48-14 and our starting QB only attempted 2 passes in the 2nd half as the Cats ran for 175 yards after halftime to preserve the win.  UM had only been giving up just over 80 yards a game rushing entering the game, including playing Oregon, before we put up 382 yards on them on the ground.

Defensively we do give up some yards through the air but we don't give up long touchdowns.  We've only given up 15 passing touchdowns all year through 12 games including playing at Texas Tech.  A lot of that starts up front with our front 7, in particular our DL who may not have eye popping stat numbers but are very effective at collapsing the pocket and making life hard on a QB - we are 2nd in the conference in pass efficiency defense, which doesn't translate well nationally because of the dynamic passing games you see in the Big Sky (and having played Texas Tech does not help).  To me the Albany offense poses a serious threat with a big gunslinger QB and a talented group of wideouts, coupled with a physical running back who looks like he needs to be gang tackled.  He does appear to be the least mobile QB we will have faced in a while so it'll be interesting to see if we can get to him with more regularity than we have against the typical mobile Big Sky QBs who get the ball out very quickly.

FYI Albany is 27th in the nation in penalties against, so our coach might actually know what he's talking about there Eli... I wouldn't call a team who is 27th nationally a team that gets penalized a lot?  If you finished that low in the CAA maybe refs just don't throw flags in the CAA - I just looked it up and Albany would be first in the Big Sky Conference by .02 yards per game over MSU (including starts from the CCSU game).  That's kind of a crazy stat - a bottom 1/3 team in penalties against in the CAA would be #1 in the Big Sky.

    Looking forward to the game!

Welcome to the board catbob. Just remember to take everything you read on this board with a grain of salt. Much of the conversation here has devolved into complaining about whatever flavor of the day needs to be complained about.  With a winning season, the tone has gotten decidedly much more positive and upbeat, but the lingering feeling of doom of the last few years still haunts the board. Just read some of the fire gattuso threads to get an idea of what I mean.

Eli's comment on turnovers was not about the stats or numbers, but about the direct effect on the outcomes of the games from the turnovers this team has had. Team is 9-4 now, but could very easily be 11-2 or even 12-1 if not for the bad timing of turnovers or problems with the kicking game. Look at it this way - if your team averaged only 1 turnover per game, but each time it led directly to a touchdown or stopped a potential game winning drive you would still consider turnovers a problem for your team. Even if that 1 per game is the best number in the country - it is the effect of them on the minds of the fans!

To me it looks more like the link is bad actually...usually it would be /username/status/tweetnumber.

Anyway, I think it was this tweet:

She definitely deleted or edited it. Definitely a shot but it doesn't matter, Lamb is graduating anyway so it does us no good if Lamb is pissed off.

It wasn't that tweet. The tweet was from a reporter, and the comments were on that thread. The link I used worked for me, but the post was deleted. It was on the AE board as well with the same linke. All deleted now. Wish I had taken a screenshot.

    What was it?

A reporter quoted Becker from after today's loss to Yale. The quote was about the UVM team playing as individuals and not as a team. Not being committed to Defense. Then Anthony Lambs mom (or sister who knows Julie Lamb I think?) commented back that it was the coaches fault.  Taking a shot at Becker.

Wish I had taken a screenshot.

  5. I know we don't play many games in the bitter cold, but I wonder how much it would cost to add those cielling heaters you see in restaurant/hotel entrances in cold weather cities to the concourse under the upper level seating. Could make that area much warmer, and some of the heat would rise up and make the bleachers in the upper deck more comfortable. When the sun was out, it wasn't too bad up there, but the metal bleachers were bad. I ended up putting my hand warmers in my back pockets to keep my butt from freezing.

From the upper deck the attendance did look like more than 1600 when you saw how many CCSU fans were on the other side plus how many were in the lower level. Upstairs had maybe 250 people max. Have to imagine much of it was underreporting for purpose of the bid to host. 1600 at an average of $20 probably pays the NCAA, then all the normal costs were sunk and at a loss. If it helps build interest in the program it is worth it as an advertising expense.

  6. The Dane Pound has a lot to be thankful for this year. An incredible Football season, a basketball team that has a lot of promise (regardless of the gas can many have) multiple other teams and athletes having banner years, and an athletic department filled with STUDENT athletes.

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

  7. Bought my tickets, but I'm still not sure if I am going to go with the weather the way it is forecasted. Its gonna be cold. They might be a donation to the athletic department or available if someone wants good seats.

Who am I kidding, I'm sure I'll be there.

Did we determine if we will have to pay for parking or if they will give us the same passes from where we were during the regular season? I haven't had a chance to call yet.

  8. I'm not saying he is going to win, but he isn't out of the conversation. JMU is expected to have seasons like this every year.

When I originally wrote it, it was tongue in cheek as the message board was still in a negative place at the time. I don't think anyone thought they would hit 7-5, much less 8-4.

    Here is a fun one...

Team was picked last in the CAA to start the season. Let's say the team goes 3-2 over the last 5 games to finish the season at 7-5, with a 5-3 mark in the CAA. Does that get GG CAA coach of the year?

Never thought I would read anyone suggest that on this board this season, much less me. Lol.

Just wanted to bump this as I was laughed at for making this comment. Let's see what happens lol

  10. I don't know what our bid to host the game looks like, but let's say we bid $40k. That's 4000 fans at $10 each to the NCAA. My seats at $25 each. If American University has a group of 40 people flying, that would be $4,000 for the typical airline change fee of $100 a ticket. Assuming there is a later flight, seems like a no brainier to pay that for them. Hell, even adding $25 a head for a per diem meal, you are up to $5,000.

If the average basketball seat is $10, you gotta imagine they would get 500 more fans to attend a night game than a 10am game. Maybe I'm wrong, but how much do they lose in gate receipts at 10am? Unless my thought of people going to the game instead of tailgating in the cold comes true.

  11. Really hope they can find a way to make the game a night game instead of doing 10am. I would love to make at a UA sports day, but there is no way I can make a 10am start. I actually had the schedule of my 5th grade game set to 1030am so I could make the 1pm basketball game. No way to move that game now. I have to imagine that the attendance to the basketball game will suck at 10am, but you  never know. Might get some football fans going to the basketball game in the warmth instead of tailgating in the freezing cold.

I think the basketball team is home at 1pm also . That will hurt attendance at both games.

Or help it if they move the schedule around so people can make a day of it.

I coach a youth basketball team and our first game of the season is at 10:30am. I hope they dont move the basketball game earlier. I was looking forward to heading straight there after our game. Now I gotta figure out if I go to the football game or the basketball game or what... It is getting COLD!

I get what you are saying... There are what... 25 games left? I'm just really discouraged right now not only with result but just how lost they are. The eye test shows me a brutal team that's not competing.

No argument there. I'm just saying that the talent appears to be there, but there has been no leadership and they aren't playing together as a team (yet). They need to go inside out, they need to attack the rim to make the 3s open up. I haven't actually been that upset with the shot selection for the most part, they just aren't falling for them.

My comments were geared towards the extreme negativity to the coaching staff, the recruiting, the kids, and everything. If the team still looks like they so right now come the middle of the conference season, then burn it down, but right now it is way to early. Brown has my trust, the talent level appears high on paper, but they need a chance to put it together. The 13-14 team may even be a better team to compare this one to. A slow start and a poor league season, followed by a trip to the NCAA as the team learned to play together.

  15. That team, Sanders and Singletary were new and had just joined the teams as JUCO transfers. Hooley was a Jr. that missed a big portion of the season. The team had role players that were unestablished like Ennema, Mike Rowley and Peters or freshman in Baker and Stire that didn't play much till late in the season.

Is Clark or JoJo a Singletary? Is Healy a Hooley? Is deSousa a Sanders? Is Rizzuto a Baker? Is Hank/French a Mike Rowley/ freshman Stire? Is Lulka/Hansen a Sam Rowley?  Is Fruscio a Williams?

I'm not saying that anyone on this team is equal to a player on that team, but I am saying the construction isn't all that different. I have the gas can and matches within my reach, but it is still way too early to write this team off.

Right now the team hasn't come together. They are shooting too many 3s. Missing wide open shots. Not running the offense. Forcing too much, and not in a good way that gets to the line.

Chances of them repeating what the team did in 14-15 are extremely low, but I don't see it as that far fetched at this point in time. Just need someone to step up and make it happen.

  16. Not ready to join any Brown bashing. He has earned trust. Disappointed with the start, and how the team has played, but the season isn't lost.

Look at the 14-15 team. That team started 2-6, and had a total non conference record of 5-7. That team went 15-1 in conference. It wasn't constructed that differently than this team.

I'm not saying this team shows any signs of being that team, or that there is reason to believe they will, but they can't continue to shoot this cold, and opponents won't shoot that hot. I think the talent is there, it's just not clicking.
