  1. No doubt that is true. But this is the new reality in college ball. The sooner mid-major coaches realize it, and adjust to do it, the better off they will be. It seems like Brown has done just that.

Many in this board have disagreed with me, but I am sticking with what I have been saying since the day the news of Joe and David leaving hit the press:

This needs to be a selling point of the program. So many talented, athletic kids are going to P5 schools, only to be recruited over by 1 and done type players. These kids would be stars in mid-major conferences, but not get anything more than mop up time in the bigs until their junior or senior year. Have them come to UA. Help them graduate in 3 or let them red shirt and graduate on time in 4. Be ROY. Be 1st team all conference. Be the star. The big fish in the little pond. Get a degree while being a rock star. Then get a starting role for your grad transfer year at a major conference school.

Everybody wins. If a mid major does it well enough, after a few years they can build the program strong enough where the players no longer want to leave because they are getting at large bids from a mid-major conference.

In today's world, this is how you become Gonzaga of the east. (sorry to use the old BS LCC line)

  2. Major conference teams have to deal with transfers as well, and they lose talent to the NBA draft every year too. While the challenges are different, mids would do well by embracing the change and working hard to get the best players they can. Utilize it as a strength, not bitch and complain and use it as an excuse.

Will Brown seems to have the right attitude, and that is why he is a consistent 20 game winner.

  3. I brought up the ability to be a leader because what I have seen in public appearances and what I have seen in videos. Part of being a leader is being able to have a commanding presence and convey the message with personality.

My biggest fear is that he seems too nice. He may have Travis Charles syndrome!

The team might be better off if they can find a gritty a$$hole as a captain who will put people in their place.

    Fruscio for Captain?

(not saying Fruscio is mean or an a$$hole - that was a comment based on something I remember about Will Brown having him try to fire up the team during halftime one game, but I may be making that up or misremembering.)

  4. Count me in the Campbell fan department, and in the beginning of the season I was happy with him taking the three point shots. As it became apparent he was missing 85% of them, it was time for a change. Defenses literally played off of him and begged him to shoot it. This limited his ability to drive to the rim, and allowed the opponents better team defense as the sagging defender was able to help others. Either he needs to figure out why the shots aren't falling (could be angle, could be rotation, could be a lot of things) and fix it, or he needs to move to the 4 and have a Charles type role. If he can't bang around inside and play the 4 or hit the open 3, then he needs a much reduced role, no matter how much it pains me to say it. That said, I am betting on a big improvement and him staying at the wing. No more Nichols and Cremo, so he will be more of a focal point.

I am guessing Campbell is the captain for this season, maybe co-captain with Clark. Both have great presence and I think they can both become vocal leaders for the team. Their leadership will ultimately decide the direction of the team.

  5. From what I have seen and read about DeSousa, I could see him being a major piece from day 1. I put him third because the team only has 2 true freshman, has a very uneven class structure, and they have options. I can see a scenario where both red shirt, giving them the option to play 3 and a grad transfer.

Brown will play the best players, and if they can make an impact on day 1, then so be it. I'd love to see it.

  6. I don't remember any year where the team had this many players who's highlight films featured play above the rim. Could be an exciting team to watch.

With only Campbell graduating after this season it could be an exciting time to be a Dane fan. That is just on paper an YouTube though. Building the team will end up being the easy part. Getting them to gel as a team, play to their potential, getting everyone to buy into their role, and keeping everyone happy enough to not transfer will be the hard part.

Does Rizzuto and/or deSousa red shirt?

    PG: Clark, Brooks, Starks

    SG: Flory, Healy, Rizzuto

    SF: Campbell, Fromm, deSousa

    PF: Lulka, Lauderdale

    C: French, Hank

  7. He committed to Marquette early in high school. Coach changed, so he decommitted. Got hurt and big schools slowed their interest even with the 4 star ESPN ranking. Took a spot as a preferred walk-on at Seton Hall. Played sparingly at first, but got some meaningful minutes near the end of the season after injuries to other guards on the team as a freshman.

Since he was a walk-on, he would be immediately eligible as a transfer. Got interest from a bunch of mid majors, and potentially some big schools, but nothing was publisized. The videos online are pretty much all from his senior year of high school, but he appears to be one of the most athletic players UA has had.

Obviously we won't know anything till we see him play, but this appears on paper to be a HUGE signing.

  8. With the Starks commit, I have to think another big will be the target. I would love to see Flory as he has the potential to provide by far the biggest impact, as he is immediately eligible, and would be able to play for 3 years, but I am thinking we might be out of the running now after putting 2 and 2 together.

According to the Setonian, he prefers to stay where he is, and will return to Seton Hall if a scholarship were to be offered to him: http://www.thesetonian.com/2018/04/27/philip-flory-settles-record-on-his-transfer-status/

Throw in some more transfer news at Seton Hall: https://www.bigeastcoastbias.com/2018/5/8/17320600/seton-hall-basketball-jordan-walker-eron-gordon-transfers

I start to see a picture being painted that has him staying put where he is.

I guess we can hope though!

  9. If it were me, I would be pushing for Flory and a Big.

I'm a little concerned the Flory would end up being Xavier Cochran. Extremely talented and athletic that lost it because of injury, but at the same time - we do not have that many opportunities to add a body that had formerly committed to Marquette, and played at Seton Hall. Kid had a 4 star rating on ESPN recruiting when in high school. He could end up being a major stud. If he never fully recovers from the injuries, he could still bring a lot to the team and would definitely be worth the gamble. He still doesn't have any other offers on Verbal Commits, which might mean something is known about health that we do not know, but I would still go after him hard.

Only 4 bigs on the roster now, so another big body - even if it is just a bench player for practice would be a help. Can never have too much size, but you can certainly not have enough.

  10. Good luck to David and Joe at your new schools. Represent UA well and go and prove yourselves. We will root for you - at least until we play and beat you in March.

Hopefully Will Brown and staff can spin both of these grad transfers as a way to win recruiting battles for the good student athletes that might not play many minutes in a big conference right away, but have goals to play at that level. They can come here, play heavy minutes from day one and be a star in a mid-major conference. Work hard in school and then transfer to a national power for a grad year.

If that strategy can work, I bet that within a few recruiting cycles the team can be move it's quality of play higher and potentially become a place that those recruits want to stay.
