  1. OT: Pikiell signed a 3 year extension at Rutgers, 15.5 million guaranteed over next 5 years. He is 26-24 since arriving including losses to SB and Hartford this season. The apocalypse is upon us.

Wow. That is nuts. He's actually a good coach, but that is a lot of money for that type of position. I thought Fran leaving Siena for 1.8 a year was big. 3+ per year?

How long does Brown stay at UA with that news?

  2. The kids are working an entertainment job, and aren't allowed other outside work. Almost seems like slave labor.

I say, let them get paid, but make all D1 athletes get paid the same amount, and make the NCAA pay for it out of their profits. No need to add another level of disparity between schools that can pay more. Make the payout dependent on the sport they play and then make a GPA modifier. Need a 3.3 GPA to get full payout. Need a 2.7-3.2 to get 75%, and a 2.5 to get 50%. Below a 2.5 and you get a whopping $0.00

  3. Well losses to 2 crappy teams, and UA stays in the Mid-Major Top 25, but falls to 23. UVM gets back into the rankings at 21

    I expected worse.

As I mentioned in another thread, I don't care about the rankings, but they can help attendance (especially students) and seeding when the team puts it together and and dances into March.

  4. WB on radio said Davids wrist is still bothering him, Joe has plantar fasciitis on one foot, wants Devonte to be more aggressive offensively, needs captains to start leading

So we have 2 star players that are fighting through injuries that are affecting their performance, yet both are playing 35+ minutes a game? Something is fishy here, unless these injuries will heal better with heavy use. I know he doesn't really trust anyone on the bench, but look at how many minutes they have played this season up until today - crazy low. No way to get confidence in the bench if they can't get into a rhythm in a game. Maybe they are doing super poorly in practice? Maybe the need to revoke the red shirts on Healy and Hank and see what they can do?

  5. Yup. Way off base with grandiose thinking based on such a great start to the season.

Have confidence. The team can still win 30! It will just take winning the next 14 conference games, 3 games in the AE Tournament, and the first game of the NCAA tournament!

LOL, the way this message board reads this last week, it appears that we are questioning if they will even make the America East Tournament! (9th seed stays home this year)

The above said, my original post on that topic was more to do that a team could win 30 and not make the tourney as a statement on how bad the America Least is.

My prediction at the beginning of the year had the team going 13-3 in league play, so there is still a chance. I even guessed one of the losses would be against NH. I just never thought Hartford would take a win. Especially at home.

  6. No reason to single out Nichols. While he has been off lately, it isn't on him. Yes he has forced bad shots and looked lackadaisical at times, but it is a TEAM issue. They have 4 captains, and each of them should be pushing everyone around them to play harder and have some fire/swagger.

We are all still kind of overreacting to 2 bad games, and I assume that none of us really know what is happening in the locker room or in practice, so we are all just venting our frustration as fans. We could be way off base. I think we all just want to see them succeed and perform to expectations.

On the flip side, maybe the team really isn't that good and the incredible OOC record was purely because the teams we played were that much worse than anyone expected in the preseason. Brown did say in almost every press conference or media appearance that the team needed to improve and that he was the unhappiest 9-1, 10-1, 12-3, etc coach in the country. Maybe he was more right than we thought.

  7. Shake stuff up for one game. Do something that will start a fire.

    Start:

    1. Clark

    2. Anderson

    3. Cochran

    4. Conway

    5. Foster

    Sub (in this order)

    Cambell

    Charles

    Stire

    Nichols

    Cremo

Keep the starters in until at least the 16:00 media timeout.

This is mostly to send a message to the captains that low energy and no one being vocal to motivate their teammates isn't going to be accepted.

I love our team, and I've stated before that I wouldn't trade any of them for anyone else in the America East, but I don't like watching the game played when it feels like the opponent is winning the majority of the loose balls and pure effort 50/50 plays. If the team is pushing hard and has a poor night or the opponent is shooting lights out and they lose, as fans we can accept that. But losing because of what appears to be effort is hard to watch.

Cremo and Nichols are both potential POY guys. Stire is a bull and plays way bigger than he is. Charles really is the walking bucket and could be a second team all AE this year. Campbell can shoot (has been terrible in games though) and is a great defensive player, but lately none of those 5 are showing any fire.

The team needs Dallas Ennema back. Say what you want about some of his antics, but I always loved how hard he played and when he raised his arms to the crowd to get everyone excited. He had fire.

  8. I can care a rats about rankings. If they continue to play like this, we will be lucky to have a .500 record in conference play.

    The team is soft.

I don't care about rankings either, but they are extremely good for marketing, and should be good for attendance: especially for student attendance when they are back on campus.

If the team is able to figure out what is happening and gets back to winning, then rankings can mean the difference between a 12/13 seed and a 15/16/PIG

  9. From the Hartford thread....

Solid defense is about energy more than anything else. You better be in peak shape if you are going to play solid defense and play 35 minutes per game.

New Hampshire apparently only has one ball handler and has had nothing but trouble with the press. UA has not pressed all season that I have seen outside of the last few minutes of close games, and has been pretty effective when they have done so.

This is where the quality of the bench is most important. We went into the season under the impression that we had 5 solid starters, 5 solid bench players, and 3 freshman that would red shirt because of injury or playing time concerns.

I would love to see Brown try to press much more and rotate and sub much more, but he can't do it if he has no confidence in the bench.

Re Cochran: he looked good in the purple and gold game, but has had no opportunity to play. My conspiracy theory is that he will get a few minutes in the first half in New Hampshire, play 15 the following game, and start to be part of the rotation in conference game 4. Like Campbell last season! (wishful thinking)

Anyway, the defense performing poorly against Hartford was 100% lack of energy and intensity.

I can't quite tell from the replay, but it looked like this was another no energy game. NH was faster to loose balls, looked like they wanted to win. UA looked like they were just going through the motions. When David tried to push and create, he was forcing it instead of doing it through the offense.

Also looks like my Cochran prediction may have been spot on.

  11. The more I think about it, the more I feel we are all over reacting. The team came out sluggish and ran into a mediocre at best Hartford team that is playing well. I think we all need to wait a few games before we panic. If they $iena the bed against New Hampshire then it might be time to panic. Only once did an AE team go undefeated. Stinkers happen. This team can still win 30 games this season before the post season. Unlikely, and it would require running through the rest of the regular schedule and AE tournament, but it's still possible.

  12. Don't get me wrong, I love David and Joe. I wouldn't trade either of them for anyone. My comment was only on the appearance of lack of energy. Someone pointed out how the game felt like the playoff loss to Hartford 2 years ago, and it was definitely the same issue that year.

It almost appeared like the team went to an all you can eat buffet before the game. Maybe it's just that Hartford is so unexciting that the team can't get up for it just as the crowds don't show up.

Maybe we can expect another loss during a day game in Orono?

  13. Both had decent box score stat lines, the blame has been going their way because it didn't feel like either of them played with any urgency during the game. Even in the end of the game when Nichols hit the 3 to bring the team back closer (I think it was the shot that brought the team 64 points?) it seemed like Nichols just kind of walked up the court then nonchalantly launched the three (which landed). Maybe it was confidence and swagger, but even my wife asked what was going on.

When you are a team captain the mentality of the team follows your mentality. If you are pushing and pressing on every play the team will follow. If it looks like you are jogging and going through the motions, the team will follow. I saw no urgency from anyone outside of 8 minutes in the second half. I'll take that back, Foster looked like he was pushing hard. Not sure why he didn't play at all in the second half.
