Half-season summary at rundexball.com
Two things struck me
Despite all the talk about it earlier, Albany actually LEADS the league in blocks
The bench PT is worse than anyone mentioned, ranked 350 out of 351 teams
Other then Foster, we have no reliable bench.
We have a talented bench, and I would love to see them play more, but I do trust Brown that they aren't reliable.
I do wish he played them more to rest the team. Might we have had the juice to win a couple more games if the starters had fresher legs down the stretch? I'm thinking the Hartford loss in particular. We made the frantic come back, then ran out of juice.

The above said. This class needs a local kid. With Stire gone this year, and Cremo next year, having a new local stand out can be good for attendance.
-
JGIII got his Michigan offer over the weekend. I believe I heard that was his #1 choice all along.
He is a great local story, and I hope to find a way to go watch one of his games this season, but I'm thinking it's probably pretty safe to take the conversation about him out of the recruiting thread and start an OT normal thread on him.
Maybe I am just a pessimist on the chances now...
-
I probably shouldn't post this because it'll probably jinx him, but after 24 games, I believe that Stire is 23-1 on the opening tip...
-
Full week off now to right the ship. 8-0 in the second half to finish the conference 12-4.

I agree with +95% of what people have been saying here {not that my agreeing or what everyone is saying mean a thing.} I would like to give Joe & David some degree of leeway on their complaining to refs. They simply [especially Joe] get beat up constantly. They get held, shoved, hip bumped and hacked to death when they drive. I've seen time and again their arms swatted on a drive attempt and no call made. Yesterday Charles blocked a shot and his hand grazed the opponents arm having really no effect on the outcome of the play, a two shot foul was awarded. Yet Joe and David pretty much have be be mauled to get a call. I would guess the number of foul shots we have taken are ½ of what they were occ. I do not think the AmEast is better defensively or less foul prone than our occ competition. In fact the AmEast is and has been since we've joined, a league predominantly of "hacks." Great athletes do not come to the AmEast. What some of you call UA being "soft"; I call UA trying to play basketball while most of the rest of the league plays football.
Now, I do wish David & Joe would not complain as much; but if you are an athlete trying to play a skills game while your competition is trying to play a brute force game, I can understand their frustrations.
Watch the ESPN3 replay of the game. Fast forward to the second half and look at the fouls with 5:50 left and with 2:30 left those are the first 2 examples I can think of...

I thought Foster looked very good last night when he was in. He missed a couple of layups being too strong, but I thought he looked great. Then he threw a pass away. Not sure if it was his fault with bad timing or what, but Brown pulled him at the next whistle and I don't think he went back in. I know I am not at practice every day, and I know no where near what he does, but I haven't been a fan of his substitution patter all season. I feel like he has taken a page from Patsos and pulling bench players after any mistake and not letting them get into any rhythm while allowing the starters to make mistake after mistake but he sticks with them. This is kind of why I wished that Joe missed a game with the injury. It would have forced WB to add 35 minutes to the bench minutes and we could see what they can do in the game situation. I don't think it would have made a difference last night. A loss is a loss no matter how close or how far.
I'll say it again, that prayer 3 at the end of the shot clock was the dagger that ended the game.

Ball game. Blocking foul that looked like a charge to me.
Not really sure how that wasn't a charge. Not sure how he could have been more set. It was the lucky 3 at the end of the shot clock that ended the game.

I saw this on twitter...that was pure mastery and very rare at any level of basketball. That was beautiful!
The most amazing thing to me was the timing of the play. The slow down at the beginning to start at just the right moment, then pass after pass only to have the dunk with only 1 second left on the shot clock. How many teams would have stopped the movement to get a shot off with 5 seconds left.
Just amazing. I know it is "mastery" and I doubt we will see that talent level at UA, but I would like to see the team make some more passes and get the defense more on their toes.

No idea where to put this, but I have watched it so many times this week I feel like I have to share it on this board as well. This is how the game is played. I made my 8 and 11 year old watch it multiple times and I can not wait to make my sons team watch it on Friday night.
One of the best TEAM possessions I have ever seen.

It was against former LCC coach to boot.

Quiet discussion for game day!
Anyone have any Cremo updates? Predictions? Thoughts?
I know Brown has downplayed the game because UA already has 3 losses, but I view it as a HUGE game. UA can still get the #1 seed in the tournament if it beats UVM both times and one other team catches them on an off night. I know we just crushed UMBC, but if they get hot from the outside I can see them pulling off a win over UVM at home - it is the grand opening of their new arena and emotions along with a big crowd could carry them.
A loss can send UA to 4 losses with the first half of the conference schedule and might move them down to a 3 or 4 seed at best.

I think that's because the voters are still voting by what the team can do as much as recent results. That Poll is voted on by other mid major coaches. They know a great team can hit a rough patch.
-
LOL. Love that GIF.
To reiterate, I hope he is fine and doesn't miss time, but I do think it would help the team in the long run if his 35 minutes were distributed among Clark, Anderson, and Cochran for a few games and give them some real experience - along with giving Joe some rest.
That said, I would rather have our best team on the floor on Wednesday and be the team that ends the UVM streak.
-
Cremo going down for a few games might be the best thing for the team anyway. It will hurt like hell for the games he is out, but the team is playing 30+ games this season. A little rest mid-season will be good for him. It will also get the bench some meaningful minutes which can help come conference tournament.
Remember how well the team did without Hooley when he left for his mum? I'm not saying this team would step up the same way, but I know the additional PT for the bench definitely made the team stronger. I fear how much improvement UVM's bench will be getting if Lamb is able to make it back before the end of the season.
I hope Joe is ok, and I hope he doesn't miss anytime, but if he is out 3 weeks, I wouldn't go so far as saying the team will suck. If you mean back to .500 in league because we lose to UVM - that may be true, but I don't think it would be a season killer.

Just rewatched it to see of my memory was correct. Anderson and Clark check in with 9 seconds left, hoping to be the one who fouls to not get anyone else in trouble. After the foul, Cremo checks in for Anderson with 6 seconds remaining. UMBC calls time out. After the time out, coach sends Anderson back in for Charles, but no time has come off the clock, so he can't re-enter enter the game until something comes off the clock as he was just taken out of the game. Coach puts in Cochran instead.I think it was because Costa came out of the game the play before, then the time out, he couldn't go back in until a play had occured. Once you leave the floor you can't come back in until some time had rolled off the clock.
That's not what I remember but I haven't re-watched the game.
1) Costa checks in
2) One play is ran, Costa is actively in the game
3) Whistle is blown for <some issue>
4) Team comes back out onto the floor, NO SUB CHANGE
5) Costa is told he can't be on the floor, Cochran comes in
Costa never 'came out' until he was forced to come out. As far as I saw from my seat.
It was odd...I was focused on the refs/Brown the whole time it was going on.

I love the benches reaction to the play at the 1:37:58 mark in the ESPN3 broadcast
-
Also, hopefully we get good news on Cremo's injury. He walked off on his own, went into the locker room, but came back out to the bench a few minutes later. Didn't return to the game. The team will need him Wednesday.

Not much to say, other than the defensive intensity look pretty darn good today. UMBC is a fast paced good shooting team. Even if they were having an off day shooting, holding them to under 40pts is damn impressive. This UA team gave up 50+ in a single half, against Maine of all teams.
Hopefully this was a coming out party and not a used up everything in the tank before Wednesday's big game.

Albany played 9 different players in the first half. Conway dressed but didn't see the floor. Anderson and Cochran were only in for one play each.
-
I'm not ready to jump off a bridge yet. How many days before the fire Will Brown calls start coming back. Jeesh. A $ienaty start to conference play yes, but do we really have this many fair weather fans?
At least wait till we get blown out by UVM to wave the white flag.

Outside of just plain shooting a much lower percentage, can anyone point out things the team was doing bbetter in the OOC? Running different sets? Being in better rebounding position? I find it hard to believe that the team can go this far backwards this late in the season. There has to be something different.
In the Hartford game, I thought it was all about energy, but now I am questioning that as that has continued game after game.
-
Well in the OOC the team looked better against the better competition. Maybe they will rise up.

Overall, we ARE currently a mid major, and that's OK. In LAX we have become the Gonzaga of the sport. We need basketball and / or football to step up before we are anything else.
