  1. The women's soccer team won today for their second win of the season. They beat NJIT by 5 goals to win 6-1. Granted, NJIT is just in its first year of Division I, but this game has to serve as a confidence-building step forward for the Great Danes. Maybe Dane96 is right (again) by saying that the current coach will turn around this program. Congratulations, ladies!
  2. UA66, I was present at the Ithaca game of which you speak, and there was a lot of hype before and after the game. Ithaca, back then was THE Division III representative of the East. You might as well not have played most of the games; Ithaca was guaranteed to win. The Albany victory was a real shocker. I knew the game at Central Florida had really drawn a large number of spectators; I didn't know how it compared to last night's draw. Thanks for bringing the real facts forth.
  3. Great idea for an article. I hope it gets published in the ASP as well. It looks like you really want to put some time into this article and do research. I mentioned this past game last night, but you might want to consider Albany's victory against Maine as one of your top games. Granted, this match took place long ago in D III times, and you may be concentrating just on relatively modern games - I don't remember even closely what year it occurred, and there are many more loyal Dane football fans around who would know this - but it was the first time Albany had beat a D I team. Best of luck in the rest of your effort to publish something really positive about UAlbany football. I hope you really raise the consciousness of our students on the positive strides (some might say leaps) the program has made in a relatively short time.
  4. The turnout will - unfortunately - depend mostly on the weather. I hope it's great. Here's the link to this morning's story in the TU: http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story...sdate=9/17/2006 I hate to be picky. I really think last night's victory was the greatest step forward for the UAlbany program in decades. How does last night's win compare to Albany's defeat of Maine when Albany was still Division III? I don't recall Maine's status back then, except it was D I. Also, when Albany played down at Central Florida, what was the attendance at that game? I know that the Montana game drew around 19,000. Just wondering. The Danes definitely have a challenge next weekend. Hope they can use home field advantage then to its fullest. Go, Danes!
  5. From the Delaware site: "The loss snapped a 13-game non-conference home winning streak for Delaware." Way to go, Danes!
  6. I found out the answer to my own question on the MTSU site. For those of you who are interested, UAlbany lost. "Middle Tennessee volleyball (9-4) won its second tournament of the season with a 3-0 (30-25, 30-25, 30-26)) shutout of host Albany (4-6) on Saturday in University Gymnasium at the University of Albany Tournament." Although the Danes lost in straight sets to MTSU, they put up quite a fight. Overall, a good weekend for a greatly improving squad. Good luck in the next match.
  7. Anyone know how the Lady Danes fared against Middle Tennessee State? I'm assuming that no news is bad news; otherwise, the score would have been posted here.
  8. Wow! This victory and UAlbany's stand against UConn! What a year!
  9. What happened with the UAlbany-Syracuse match? I had to leave the broadcast with UAlbany up, surprisingly, 2 sets to 0. Thanks for the info.
  10. Statefan, Why am I surprised that you responded to this thread? Like you, I was disappointed with the content of the article. There was no real meat in it. The author could have indicated how strong the rivalry had been, and you were correct in identifying great eyewitnesses who could have provided great information from that era. Even if the author is knowledgeable about the older rivalry, as a service to the younger classes, he could have described just how intense the rivalry has been. UAlbany has been criticized in the past as being a very apathetic campus with little school spirit. The article missed a great opportunity to educate the students and alleviate that problem.
  11. Patch, Good advice. Here's another "insightful source" from the MAAC Voyforum on the same topic: "Just an FYI - Jimmer Fredette, who would be the biggest Albany-area signing by Siena in 20 years - called the Siena staff today and told them that he will verbal at the end of this week. Seems BYU, up close and personal, isn't what Jimmer was expecting. Main factor - he wants to play in front of his family. Really, really good news for Siena."
  12. UAlbany lost to UMass yesterday by one goal: 1-0. Although the match ended in a loss, it might signal a change in the team's fortunes. Over the years women's soccer has suffered poor records year after year. From the UAlbany Athletic site: "UMass (4-1-0) won the third meeting in this series, but it was much closer than the previous two contests. UAlbany (1-5-1) was defeated by six-plus goals in both 1999 and 2000, when the program was in its Division I infancy." http://www.albany.edu/sports/stories.htm#wsoc06umass In yesterday's match, the freshman (freshwoman?) goalie, Maria Liguori, made 10 saves. She may be a "keeper" (yes, pun intended). A team which I labeled earlier this season as UAlbany's arguably "weakest team" may have turned its fate around. Congratulations, women, on your moral victory. I look forward with pleasure to some W's later this season.
  13. There are only 2 seconds left on the clock in the first half. I cannot hear the game. Are the Rams really improved so much from last year? Are the Danes suffering a letdown from the Le-high last weekend?
  14. UAlbany and Siena played to a scoreless tie after two overtimes. This information comes from the Siena Athletics site. Arguably, this venue is UAlbany's worst sport in all three seasons; yet, the Danes were not defeated tonight. Hopefully, this season this team will make a turnaround and see a lot more success.
  15. Okay, it's now 5 days into September and past Labor Day, so we should be hearing very soon about the schedules for the men's and women's teams any day now? I know the delay is supposedly due to working out the AE TV package deal. Anyone hear any more details on which days we'll be playing? Time to map out that personal schedule.
  16. I'm interested in the opinions of other posters here on this board. Do you think the coverage given by the Times-Union was the most anemic article you've seen in a long time? I'm used to seeing more information on actual plays. Maybe it's just me, but for the significance of this game, I was very disappointed.
  17. Dane96, Yes, Spain is great. My wife and I had the opportunity to make a visit a few summers ago. We spent 12 days there in a variety of places. I loved every place we went. I was surprised how modern Madrid can be. We really liked the Roman ruins in Segovia. Sevilla was great, but 108° is hot, no matter how dry it is. I liked Cordova and its white-washed buildings. The gardens and fountains at the Alhambra really appealed to me, especially in the heat. I could go on and on. Glad you had a great trip. It was really cool that you actually saw a match over there. I'm a little surprised you saw as much as you did in the relatively short time you had there.
  18. Ruler, You're absolutely correct about the facilities at other State schools as much better than UA facilities. Our football facilities are a disgrace. When I was referring to the program UA has, I was thinking only in terms of the personnel. What a tribute it would be to Bob Ford if a brand new facility could be named to honor the 35 years or so that he has dedicated to UAlbany and to commemorate the huge improvement he has brought to the program since he started it.
  19. Dane96, I'm with you on the frustration end of this discussion. If we were to institute hockey, then it would compete too much with basketball. We have finally turned the corner with building up a good Division I men's program in terms of both success and fan interest, and then you would tear part of it down with the competition with ice hockey which runs approximately the same time as other winter sports. You cannot tear down a program like football which basically one man, Bob Ford, has literally built out of nothing to spend huge amounts of money on that would not be a guarantee. Guys, enjoy the growth of the programs we have now. I can tell you all as a long, long-time UAlbany fan that it could be far, far worse. Look at your colleagues at the other components of the State University system. Most of the 4-year schools are stuck at the Division III level, and they will be there for the foreseeable future. Most of them do not have any form of football at all. We are extremely fortunate at UAlbany to have great programs at a much higher level of competition and improving all the time. Dane, I'm jealous of you. Which part of Spain did you like the best?
  20. Nope! Also already graduated. The "71" in my moniker doesn't necessarily refer to the 20th century.
