Gross thinks SU football in Albany

Recommended Posts

Yesterday, SU football pulled off their first spring practice event at the Rhino's stadium in Rochester in front of...200 fans.

SU athletic director Daryl Gross was impressed with the 10,000-seat soccer stadium and said the SU men's and women's soccer teams might play a regular-season game at Sahlen's — perhaps as early as this fall.

"It's a wonderful facility," he said. "If it had been 55 or 60 (degrees), I'm sure a lot more people would come."

Gross has been marketing SU as "New York's team" but made it clear that doesn't mean just New York City.

"We'd like to (practice) in other cities, too, like Albany," he said. "We're the only BCS team in New York state. It's why we wear 'N.Y.' on the backs of our helmets."

Pure delusion. SU's Rochester alumni group has about 15K members. It numbers about 5K in Albany. If the G-Men don't draw 10's of thousands at University field in the heat of summer when not much is going on, what the heck is Gross smoking to think they'd pack someplace like RPI's stadium when hockey, LAX, and the tournament are the focus of CD sports fans?

How about all his teams playing in other parts of NY if he really wants to be "NY team"

I won't go see any of his teams practice, but would love it if occasionally his lacrosse team among others came to Albany to play UAlbany.
