Doesn't it s*ck to be SUNY

Classof72/74

I felt it necessary to edit the above post, because the faculty number was significantly different.

Don't know where I got that particular number when I did it... it's been a while now.

For the sake of fairness, I also categorized and upgraded their economic impact to Low. Those freshmen do slap down the dollars and support the downtown catinas.

I thought I'd throw my stone into the pond of collegiate reality.

UAlbany is a REAL institution of higher learning.

The only newspaper in Albany and the arena it holds the naming rights for....

needs to support its resident basketball team, and thus, its college.

It's a small minded mentality if its goal is to neglect the MAJOR universities in the area.

If one wants an excellent, nationally ranked education and is intelligent enough NOT to go into $120k in debt for a college education, one chooses UAlbany.

Keep in mind, these figures were compiled a year or two ago.

Why do we still post these rankings from 04-06 I wouldn't be proud to compare rankings from 5 years ago. Where are all the updated polls and rankings. The only one that can be take seriously for today 2009 is the nano science.

Almost went two days without a nice article about UA.....

front and center on www.timesunion.com now......

With friends like Ted (Editor-in-Chief) of the ASP....who needs enemies?

WTF!!

UAlbany was the last school on the list, coming in at No. 25. Here’s what the magazine had to say on why the university made the cut:

“While their academics and athletics leave much to be desired, Albany just barely makes the list on merit of their epic parties. If they hope to be here again the students better start going to class.”

Both the UAlbany campus and the region abound with extracurricular opportunities. Students participate in more than 150 student clubs, honor societies, and other campus-related groups, and choose from a busy calendar of campus events, including spirited Division I athletic competition in 19 sports and a rich array of cultural activities.

Throughout its history, the University has graduated generations of leaders in all fields. Today, more than two-thirds of undergraduates go on for advanced degrees, and acceptances to law and medical schools are above the national average."

"UAlbany was ranked 67th nationally among the 100 Best Values in Public Colleges by Kiplinger’s magazine in 2009 for in-state students, and 39th for out-of-state students. According to the publication, listed institutions are “noteworthy for their combination of top-flight academics and affordable costs.”[9]

The most recent US News ranking placed UAlbany in the third tier of universities which award doctoral degrees.[10] UAlbany is also placed in the grouping of 91st-114th for US universities and in the grouping 201st-302nd for universities worldwide by the annual Academic Ranking of World Universities conducted by the Institute of Higher Education, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China.[11]

The University is ranked 15th nationally in research expenditures among universities without a medical school faculty. It attracted a record $391.7 million in research awards in 2007-08.

The Chronicle of Higher Education has ranked six UAlbany doctoral programs -- criminal justice, educational administration, curriculum instruction, educational leadership, "teacher education in specific study areas," and social welfare -- in its "Top 10" nationally in the publication's last two surveys.[12]

Not true. Many of these programs are still ranked where they were. Criminal Justice has historically been the #1 program in the nation ever since 1968 when the graduate program was created for CJ; it was the first graduate program (i.e., awarded a Ph.D) in the nation for CJ. Maryland vaulted to the #1 spot a few years back because, one would never guess, they came across a $12 million, three-year grant from, guess who? -- their neighbor, the Dept. of Homeland Security. Expect to see UA back at thet #1 spot when that money dries up for Maryland.

Not to mention that most of the criminal justice schools in the country (graduate and undergraduate) teach according to the "Albany Model."

Criminal justice doesn't get its due because most people see criminal justice and think of the ITT Tech commercials for security guard training. The criminal justice program at UA is the leading Criminology (the science of deviance) program in the country.

You're right Danefan. Had some friends in the Criminal Justice program and there were a lot of people from around the country who came to study it in Albany.

the science of deviance

That's a pretty good band name right there.

Couldn't have said it better myself! And you're absolutely correct about the "Albany Model." When I was in the Ph.D program there, there were doing, and apparently still are conducting, a multigenerational study of Rochester-based youths. The study is incredible unique given its length of time that it has been ongoing (started in 1988): http://www.albany.edu/hindelang/youth_study.html
