  1. A "field house" seems to mean a lot of different things. What would it include? Indoor field for football, tennis, track, weight room, etc? Where would it be located? Stadium end zone or elsewhere? I realize these are just guesses but its insightful
  2. Did we request specific athletic funding (aka field house) or even a pot for athletics? What did we request? A general pot of money or specific projects?
  3. UAlbany is asking for $293M in capital funds. Wonder where they say the money will be spent? Wonder if we have a chance to get the funds?... afterall we dont have "Buffalo" or "Stony Brook" in our university name. I find bills that include those names have a greater likelihood of getting passed. http://wnyt.com/article/stories/S2948453.shtml?cat=300
  4. I think both "University of New York" and "New York State University" are open for grabs... similar to University of Florida and Florida State. Whatever we use it should be consistent. Nothing kills a brand like inconsistent naming. Why do I need to set up a dozen media alerts just to follow one university? I bet Georgia Tech grads don't have to do such crap.
  5. I do wish this university would hire a marketing firm to fix our mess of a name. No wonder as I travel the country people say they have never heard of my alma mater despite the fact that I see articles in the USA Today, CNN etc covering UAlbany. The media never uses the same name twice. Is it UAlbany, University at Albany, SUNY Albany, State University at Albany, SUNY, State University of New York, CNSE, Albany Nano, SUNY CNSE or Albany State? I realize the last one isn't even our school but I have seen it mistakenly applied to UAlbany. I've seen them all used to refer to UAlbany. Fixing our broken name would resolve a lot of this mess.
  6. I don't think there are any real concerns here. The fact is UAlbany and CNSE are tied together through their undergraduate and graduate degrees. Kayoleros sits on the UAlbany Foundation board. The land may or may not be part of UAlbany. There are a vast array of ties between the college and UAlbany proper. UAlbany and CNSE are part of the same organization even though the much more successful CNSE may sometimes forget that fact. The other point I've made in the past is that the sum is worth more than the parts. Look at a university like Michigan or Wisconsin. It is so strong collectively because its parts are tied together in a uniform organization. I don't think the Michigan Law School, Michigan Medical School etc would be so prestigious without the connection to the other prestigious schools under the university umbrella. The athletics program also shines constant attention on the university. All the parts complement each other. This has been my complaint with the Capital District for decades. The Capital District has a SUNY Center (aka flagship) state university but it's not tied to the local law school, medical school, pharmacy school, etc etc. The Nano College is great but it's not enough. What is the net result? All of those independent schools suffer in the rankings. We have all the parts in the Captial District to make a mighty state university on par with any other... but the parts alone hold little value. What good is an "independent" law school that is ranked in the lower middle of the pack? Long story short, I think the CNSE sees the value of being part of a larger SUNY Center (aka "flagship"). I just wish the other institutions would get over themselves and see that a team is better than a bunch of "independent" actors.
  7. There must be renderings and plans of future phases. The point has been made several times that this stadium is modular. We see the elevator already goes to a non-existent floor. Has anyone seen those renderings?
  8. http://www.tampabay.com/hometeam/blog/springstead-ot-will-allen-commits-ualbany/16721/ Looks like a great pick up
  9. Rumors that Siena could get the nod to get into the Catholic 7. Talk about dumb luck if it happens. http://4guysinblazers.com/siena-mentioned-as-potential-addition-to-catholic-7/6531
  10. Huge win over the 'Cuse! Is this our first win in any sport? 16-15 on 2 OT
  11. I still think its an upgrade. Aren't they getting College of Charlston and others? "The Colonial Athletic Association being a likely destination"..... Where else could we go? Even relatively wild conference guesses are welcome.

  13. Not a rumor anymore. Maybe UA and SBU are moving to the CAA? That would be good. "Both Albany and Stony Brook have been rumored to be heading elsewhere with the Colonial Athletic Association being a likely destination." http://www.midmajormadness.com/2013/2/13/3984524/umass-lowell-transition-division-1-america-east
  14. Some conferenes are going to follow suit with the Big Ten and drop FSC games. It'll take some time but I'm sure it'll be a domino scenario. We need to get into the CAA build up our resources, score some wins and try to get into FBS. UMass-Lowel joining the America East is a sign of the end but that $1M exit fee is HUGE. I wonder if the entire CAA would look to upgrade to FBS once the money games dry up?
  15. I want to eventually go FBS so I don't like the CAA $1M exit fee but this news makes me think UA and SBU should make the move to the CAA.
  16. We need to parlay the success to a league upgrade. That'll motivate her to want to stay and not seek greener pastures that come along with success.
  17. I hope we have her under a long term contract or she really loves snow. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2013/basketball/ncaa/wires/02/11/2060.ap.bkw.wcbk.performance.index.1st.ld.writethru.0743/?mobile=no#
  18. I'm not going to go back-and-forth on this issue with you. You have your opinion and I have mine. I have my loyalty and you have yours. Any conversations with you seem to be completely fruitless. I don't spend any time on UB websites, threads or UB fan inspired forums. Not even in a casual passing fashion. I don't care and I wish you would take the same position. I'm sure there are multiple interesting threads you could comment on UB's forums. I suggest your thoughts will be better received there.
  19. UBBulls, the one thing that does need to change with SUNY is this trashing of other SUNY Centers. Here you are arguing against UAlbany. Buffalo and Stony Brook tried to throw Binghamton and Albany under the bus during the flagship argument a few years ago with the now discgraced former governor. Now I see Buffalo and Stony Brook trying to circle the wagons against Albany despite some very serious research numbers. It has to end. The University of California is 10 schools. 10! 6 are AAU members. They don't throw each other under the bus and it may explain in part why the UC system is so prestigious. SUNY on has 4 SUNY Centers out of 64 campuses. You think the 4 could pull each other up or at least not try to stop each other. We need "SUNY" to have a good national reputation and dragging your fellow SUNY Center through the mud or throwing up road blocks is not productive.
  20. "So if Buffalo did the same with the research done by our affliated medical staff at institutions among the Buffalo-Niagara Medical Campus, or SBU with Brookhaven and others, we'd each have a much larger figure as well." You make some valid points. I do take issue that CNSE shouldn't be included. Brookhaven as a part of Stony Brook is not a fair comparison. We're talking about the "College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering". This is actually a college within UAlbany such as Business or Computing. It should definately be counted. Brookhaven is not a college within Stony Brook. It's just an affiliation. All of the SUNY Centers suffer from some of the same criteria. Endowment is poor across the baord. I do think the other criteria you throw in such as undergrad performance are not the primary drivers to AAU . Research is the key. AAU is a club for big research universities not undergrad liberal arts. Research is why Nebraska and Syrcuse got kicked out. Nebraska had less than $100 M in research and it was largely agriculturcal focused, which the AAU discriminates against. They don't like Ag. Albany smokes Nebraska in research and the pace is only picking up with CNSE and the new $165M NY2020 plan. The good news is that the numbers are improving across the board for SUNY Centers. Research is up. NY2020 will be a huge boost to both research dollars and a boost in faculty. California has nearly every UC system in AAU. I don't think it merited in all cases. UC has at least 2x the number of campuses than there are SUNY Centers. I can see SUNY pushing to get Albany in as their 3rd and rightly so.
  21. I was doing some searching one weekend on research universities to see where UA stands. My assumption is this is the big factor to getting into AAU. I kept hearing we produce about $400M in research grants per year. This is way ahead our SUNY Center peers. The SUNY NY2020 presentation also shows this number and puts us just south of Virgina Tech. We're actually ahead of a number AAU research universities including former AAU member Nebraska. What I took away was our tiny endowment is the biggest factor holding us back. At $400 M in research we're rocking but at $30 M in endowment we're back of the class. The endowment number was being used in the calculation and thus dragging down our standing. http://mup.asu.edu/research2011.pdf http://www.albany.edu/news_images/nysuny2020etecfinal.pdf
