Unequal SUNY Center Funding

For those paying attention does anyone other than me feel UA is getting screwed lately?

 

1) UA loses it's most prestigious college last year

2) Once UA demonstrated success with a joint public-private program like nano it's pulled away and all new programs are going to other centers, specifically Buffalo.

2a) $100M in the State of the State for Genome Research

2b) $1B for solar greatly helping UB again

 

I know Buffalo is a dying region and Cuomo is trying to buy votes from a much diminished but still large population using UB as the state's funding distribution into western New York point but come on!

 

Cuomo is throwing money at UB like there's no tomorrow. I'm sure SBU will get their share too as Long Island will defend their SUNY Center. UA and BU get the crumbs due to a weak and uninterested legislative contingent. Political patronage is awful in New York. Funding is all about three men in a room and those three men will only care about NYC and Buffalo.

 

If getting funding requires your region to be the next Detroit of poverty and despair lets hope the Capital District is the next Buffalo.

Buffalo has sun?

It's said many times that Buffalo has the sunniest and driest summers of any major Northeastern city. It's an effect of lake breezes keeping the metro area's skies more cloud-free, and the local climate more moderate than other places. Miami, Honolulu...and Buffalo, are the only major US cities to never reach 100^o.UB's Solar Strand was funded by the Power Authority, not state leaders, since there is such a great windfall from the Niagara Power Project each year. It's a minor project. The big local project is the Buffalo High-Tech Manufacturing Innovation Hub. As you can see, Dr Kaloyeros and Nano have a big hand in bringing this. So he is definitely digging himself a deeper hole with some UA backers...if that's even possible:

Is much of this Cuomo looking to win over a local electorate who showed more support for local boy Carl Paladino? You bet. He's traveled to WNY more than most governors, and there's talk that if Lt Gov Duffy is replaced, Buffalo Mayor Brown would be the front runner to replace him. And you can bet he'll try to win over more LI voters too, with his property tax reform ideas and likely extras to SBU.

 

But it's not completely throwing money at nothing. Buffalo is a poor city but the overall metro saw higher private-sector jobs (7400) from the prior year than other Upstate Metros. And Erie County saw an estimated population increase in the last 2 years. Buffalo has key resources to drive this Genome project (UB's existing life sciences, our super computer, Roswell Park Cancer Institute) and it supports the Downstate institutions who are part of the Genome consortium....including SBU:

Screwed always not just lately. What is happening with this? Has the split been finalized? Is the SUNY College of Nano Science an entity? And most importantly WHERE'S THE BEEF? Has UA gotten it''s pitiful separation allowance?

I agree the public is in the dark.

 

What's worse the area politicians don't care. When have you heard a Capital District stand up and say UA is our SUNY Center and I demand to know what's going on?

Not much has been release for the budget this year .. tomorrow it'll all be out. But it looks like Binghamton is getting a Pharmacy school.

In a story yesterday on SUNY Research Foundation supplementing officials' salaries Pay gets $21M boost at SUNY

 

"University at Albany President Robert Jones' $110,000 per year from the foundation builds on his $385,000 state salary plus a $60,000 housing allowance.

 

Asked whether Jones' stipend will be lowered if the research portfolio he would be overseeing shrinks, Doyle said Jones' compensation package will remain the same. The NanoCollege is splitting from UAlbany and its giant research portfolio will go with it.

 

Research Foundation President Timothy Killeen said Jones still has a lot to manage and opportunities to grow Albany's research activities, including by collaborating with the NanoCollege.

 

"It's not a performance-based stipend," he said, adding that SUNY has a cap on how much it can spend on presidential recruits,.."

The problem is very basic. UAlbany has two major disadvantages relative to our SUNY Center peers.

 

1) SUNY spending is completely political.

 

 

1a) UB benefits heavily from its region's economic distress. Want to send money to Western New York? UB is the dissemination tool.

1b) Binghamton getting a pharmacy school or Syracuse getting a stadium is completely based on getting money to those regions to buy votes.

1c) The Capitol Region doesn't rank high on the wealth redistribution priority list. New Yorkers don't like 'Albany' and the area is smaller so our legislative contingent has less sway.

 

2) New York's capitol is already the home to a law school, pharmacy school, medical school, etc. The problem is they are all private. Politics again trumps everything. Cuomo doesn't do what's right. He does what he's rewarded to do. He's not going to anger those private colleges by adding a state college to compete with them.

 

I'm not sure how UAlbany fixes this issue. Do we just become the permanent underclass of SUNY Centers? Short of getting a governor from the Capital District with an affinity for UAlbany I think we have no shot.

BTW in their first year in the ACC, Onondaga County's College Team averaged just over 38,000 at the dome, more than 10K short of capacity, even with 49K against Clemson. And that was announced: one columnist said there was laughter in the press box when 33K was announced for the Wagner game; another said a source told him the 35K Pitt game had an actual turnstile count of 21,000.

Doesn't Gillibrand have ties to Albany? I realize that she's national and not local or state anymore but I imagine she wields some serious influence in the region still

She grew up in Albany, but she went to Dartmouth and UCLA Law.

Our time in the sun with a powerful local politician was with Senator Bruno and most of those wins were on nano college funding... which is to say a total loss. 10 years of funding to a college that no longer resides at UA. I curse that nano college! A lost decade!

 

Bruno said he never he knew about the $40M stadium request. Someone is either lying or blew it big on that story. The legislature passed it and then it failed in the senate. It still annoys me.

 

Bingo now has money for both a law school and a parmacy school. This is outside of the NY2020 funding. UA has none of that support. There better be some big announcement for UA. Isn't there suppose to be some payback for the loss of nano? Something!?!

Everyone is scrapping for funds with knives... Ours happens to be plastic. No one to blame but ourselves... Just my opinion.

Cuomo's plan would raise SUNY/CUNY tuition by an expected $300 per year, part of an overall five-year plan of announced increases. The budget calls for an additional $140 million investments at four SUNY campuses in Binghamton, Stony Brook, Buffalo and Albany. The governor's plan also calls for free state tuition for the top 10 percent of high school graduates who study science, technology, engineering and math. The budget would also establish a pharmacy school at Binghamton.
