Matchups?

Projected starting five

Tajuan Agee, Jr., F: The 6-foot-9 transfer from Tyler (Texas) Junior College initially committed to New Mexico. Cluess raved about his upside, including inside-outside skills and athleticism. "He can be really good, like really, really special — one of the more special players we've had here," Cluess said.

E.J. Crawford, Jr., F: Crawford, who, along with McGill, is the only other returning player, has been a valuable player during his two seasons in New Rochelle. He's improved his conditioning and is expected to drive to the basket more after working mostly as a spot-up shooter.

Asante Gist, Jr., G: The rugged 5-foot-11 guard played high school ball for Bob Hurley at St. Anthony's. He transferred to Iona from Eastern Kentucky and was originally expected to sit the first semester before an NCAA waiver made him eligible immediately.

Rickey McGill, Sr., G: The all-MAAC guard was named first-team all-league this preseason. The Spring Valley native has won MAAC titles all three seasons and is expected to be the team's on-court leader.

Isaiah Still, Jr., G/F: Like Gist, Still arrives as a proven scorer who has already averaged double-digits at the Division I level. At 6-foot-6, the Robert Morris transfer is long and versatile, but he will have to improve his efficiency.

Top reserves

Payton Hudson, Fr., G: The former Stepinac product played last season at Our Savior Lutheran. He's strong for a freshman, which should allow him to contribute defensively early in his career.

Jahnathan Maxwell, Jr., F: The skilled 6-foot-8 junior-college transfer from Odessa (Texas) College broke a bone in his foot during the summer. He was out for five months and will need time to regain his conditioning. He's expected to play immediately and could be a starter later this season.

Niksa Nikolic, Jr., F: At 6-foot-8 and 235 pounds, the Serbian big man will give the Gaels some bulk in the paint. He could even get the nod over Agee or Still on opening night.

Ben Perez, Jr., G: The junior-college transfer began his career at San Diego State. He's a strong shooter who should contribute right away, in or out of the starting lineup.

Andrija Ristanovic, Fr., F: The 6-foot-11 redshirt freshman can stretch the floor. Like Maxwell, Ristanovic may soon play a bigger role, but just returned this week after a broken bone cost him six weeks. Although he has yet to play, he spent last season with the team.
