UAlbany field hockey celebrates its victory over Stanford in the America East championship on Sunday in Orono, Maine.

The UAlbany field hockey team, ranked 17th in the nation, is headed back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2018 following a thrilling 2-1 shootout victory over Stanford in the America East championship game on Sunday.

Trailing 1-0 late in the fourth quarter, sophomore Blanca Orsola collected a rebound, dodged the goalie, and lifted the ball into the net with just two and a half minutes remaining in regulation. Stanford earlier grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second quarter as Caroline Guden redirected a shot by Cara Sambeth from the top of the circle.

After two 10-minute overtime periods failed to yield any scores, the Cardinal and the Great Danes headed into a shootout to determine which team would represent the America East in the NCAA Tournament next week.

UAlbany senior goalie Hannah Mangan stood firm, securing two saves against the Cardinal. Meanwhile, UAlbany’s Floor de Ruiter, Alison Smisdom and Charlotte Triggs each scored on their shots. Senior Julie Rodijk then secured the title for the Great Danes with a successful try, giving the Danes a 4-1 edge and no path for Stanford to tie the game.

“It was a fantastic game all around,” UAlbany Coach Phil Sykes, who has now leads the Great Danes back to the NCAA Tournament for the seventh time in his career. “I thought in the end, of course, you want to win but it’s a shame somebody had to because it was so evenly fought.”

“Both teams played great. We had a long spell where we were down 1-0 and sometimes you can try to force a goal and sort of panic but I was so proud of our girls for staying the course and following the game plan,” said Sykes. “Both teams had great looks; both goalies played amazingly. The shootout was a nice redemption from last year — in a way, we defeated our demons.”

UAlbany advanced to the America East final in 2021 as well but fell to Maine, 2-1 in a shootout. This year’s squad has at least one more game on the season.

Despite being outshot by a more then 2-1 margin and Michigan controlling the play most of the game ... UAlbany goalie made some incredible saves UAlbany will face the winner of the Penn State and Louisville match on Sunday.
