Unless I'm missing something, this is truly next level for UA.

This is truly outstanding. There was a page & ½ in the TU this AM. But it is still not the BIG ONE. UA waiting and still in the running for a share of the 55 Billion National Research Hub. Schumer lead on this initiative and as I recall it passed congress two years ago. Most of the 55 billion is geared to Chip Manufacturing Plants. But a significant amount is included for one, two or several research HUBS. With the most likely number being TWO hubs [one on the west coast & one on the east coast {with UA Nano being leading east contender}.]

The above will ADD to UA's status and chances of becoming a HUB; but pretty sure it is not directly connected. Anyone with more information on HUB status and how if anything this latest development fits in the BIG ONE, OPINIONS and THOUGHTS encouraged.

ps the 10 million is mostly corporate investment , HUB money will be from the federal government.

Here's a statement that was put out today by Rodriguez. And this is the tweet, which was finally shared on their main X account.

He says, "As the nation’s first college dedicated to nanoscience and semiconductors, the University at Albany’s College of Nanotechnology, Science, and Engineering stands ready to work with our long-standing partners at NY CREATES..."

Seems the money went to specifically NY Creates...so how exactly the university will be involved seems TBD.

Sorry, travelling a lot for work so responses are delayed.  NY Creates is a P3 consortium that is run by NYS, and SUNY is the management company of the Albany NanoTech Complex via Fuller Road Management.  In essences, it's not 100% tied to UA but it is effectively UA from an outward standpoint and the creation of the Nanoscale school.

The money has already been earmarked for the following two items:

The $1 billion goes to purchase of the machinery, under the UA name (per my understanding).

The rest of the money goes to building a new, 55,000 sqft facility on the campus at the NanoScale Complex.

The private companies, as has always been the case, will be responsible for hiring the workers...while the State, via NYS and SUNY provide support staff, in addition to the access provided to the College of Nanoscale.

It's a massive step...and the next step is the key.  If we become a HUB, it changes the game entirely.  For comparison, it is the equivalent of what the federal government undertook with its partnership with MIT in setting up Draper Labs. That research facility has supported military (DARPA) and other government projects for nearly 100 years as a "non-profit" research lab.  This falls in the same scope, if awarded.

This is super helpful--thanks for the clarity. I work in higher ed communications, so it still puzzles me why this wasn't rolled out by the university as a huge announcement. This is what a comms department for a school like UA dreams about, and this tweet doesn't reflect that. Let's hope they do more if the Hub happens.
