  1. Good, honest review of our potential. It should be an interesting season. Thanks, Reeder, for providing the review.
  2. I do not think the sparse crowds at UAlbany basketball games are any mystery. A dismal 5-23 record last year does not help. Personally, I liked watching the team better last year though we won two fewer games than in 2002-03. Last year's team was "in" more games and had more intensity more of the time, but the 5-23 record is what people look at. I do believe, however, that this year's team will turn the corner. Spectators will come out to see a 7'1" center. They will like Jamar Wilson's moves and improvements the other team members will bring to the action. And we should not be seeing the team's energy lag at the crucial end of the game. All these factors will draw more students and then more members of the community. It might take a couple seasons before we see decent crowds, but this season, barring any unforeseen tragedy, will mark the beginning of a more loyal fanbase.
  3. The university has just released official schedules for both the men's and women's teams.
  4. Does anyone know whether UAlbany will be considered the host team under terms of the new contract?
  5. Thanks, UAAlum 72, Your info on home dates is invaluable. Once again, thanks.
  6. Statefan, Do you have dates for the conference games? Thanks, if you can provide them. I need to start the calendar.
  7. Dane Pound, Thanks for keeping us informed on all possible developments in UAlbany athletics. You and others like Dane96 and Patch help us get through the summer doldrums when there is little activity on the court or field. Thanks for doing a great job.
  8. One factor that will bring unity to the team next year to a very different team is the fact that the older, more mature members will be witnessing more victories. They will use this new experience to encourage any method - hopefully, cooperation will be the main ingredient - to continue winning. It will be exciting finally to reap the hard efforts that the coaching staff and administration have invested in this new endeavor. I enjoyed watching this team struggle valiantly against strong odds every night they played, but I am planning to savor every success next season.
  9. Dane2K3, Thanks for the actual figures for the Syracuse game from an old UAlbany program. I won't be a Dane2k3 hater. I think your comments are right on the mark. Our attendance has not been that great. As close as many students are to the game sites, few of them attend. I think in order for attendance to improve, the school will have to make a new tradition of support for UAlbany basketball. That improvement will come only after the team has been successful in terms of W's and L's. One season may not be enough to turn attendance around. We will probably have to experience back-to-back seasons for the turnaround to occur. The most successful season that I remember regarding high attendance had to be back in the Division III years. It must have been somewhere between 1972 and 1974 where the campus hit its stride. When the team was on a 25-game home winning streak, the gym -- obviously in the old building -- sold out several games in a row when we stunned Brockport to win our 24th in a row and beat Potsdam with Mike Deane for the 25th and tried to beat Buffalo (the only DI team on our schedule). The old gym literally rocked with fan support. Hopefully, we can sell out the new gym for the BPG this year and start the tradition then.
  10. If I remember correctly, the attendance at the Pepsi Arena, as reported by the Times Union, was around 9,000. Unfortunately, there were so many Syracuse fans there that I felt it was more like one of their home games.
  11. I really don't get the baseball score. The general athletics page shows a 17-1 loss to Marist. But the baseball page shows a 4-3 overtime victory over Pace at Pleasantville. Am I mistaken, or is there an inconsistency here?
  12. Patch, Thank you! (Der big Man). You just warmed the ######les of my heart. Everyone, Yes, and now that the tourney is no longer tied to Boston, maybe Albany can be the host in 2006!
  13. From www.collegesports.com/sports/m-lacros/cs-m-lacros-body.html Minutemen lose second in a row at Garber Field. March 16, 2004 AMHERST, Mass. - Albany outscored the UMass men's lacrosse team, 8-5, in the second half to rally for an 11-10 victory over the Minutemen at Garber Field on a blustery, snowy Tuesday afternoon. The loss drops UMass' record to 2-3 overall, heading into Saturday's contest at Brown. The two teams traded four first-period goals in a 2:30 span midway through the first period. After Albany had taken 1-0 and 2-1 leads, Chris Doyle (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) and Gene Tundo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) notched goals to bring the Minutemen even. However, neither team mounted much of an offensive threat for most of the first period. The Minutemen then started being the aggressor, outscoring the Great Danes, 3-1, in the second period. Kevin Glenz (Merrick, N.Y.), Neil Lundberg (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Matt Tundo (Orchard Park, N.Y.) all netted goals for UMass to give it a 5-3 halftime advantage. But for the second straight game, the Minutemen failed to hold on to a halftime lead. After Ryan Connolly (North Andover, Mass.) gave UMass a 7-4 lead with 7:24 to play in the frame, Albany would score three of the last four goals of the period to stay within striking distance at 8-6. Matt Tundo would push the lead to 9-7 at the 12:47 mark after a Frant Resetarits netter for Albany. The Great Danes then scored the game's next four goals, including two by Chris Martocchia, to claim an 11-9 advantage with 3:22 to play. Sean Morris (Marshfield, Mass.), seeing his first action of the season, would net a goal with 1:25 to play to cut the lead to 11-10, but Albany goalie Kevin Rae made two of his 17 saves in the final minute to preserve the victory for the Great Danes. UMass outshot Albany, 44-27, and won 14-of-24 face-offs, but couldn't solve Rae. Bill Schell (Mahopac, N.Y.) stopped six shots for UMass. The Minutemen will travel to Brown for a 1:00 p.m. face-off on Saturday, March 20, before returning home for a 3:00 p.m. contest with Sacred Heart on March 23.
  14. What about this selection: all four! Everyone had to step up and give every effort when Wilson and Hughes could not.
  15. I am so proud of this team. Especially after the 2OT loss to Stony Brook, I thought the team would come out flat. Furthermore, if I were in their shoes, I would probably just want the season to be over. This team has a great no-quit attitude. Next year's "skeleton crew" should have excellent on the floor presence. They certainly have been through the wringer.
  16. I just found out the answer to my own question. The game was not over yet at the time of my previous email. The ninth inning still had to be played. Since neither side scored in the 9th, Albany won the game 5-3. Another great game for the Danes!
  17. Has Albany already won the game against Missouri? I just checked the UAlbany website which indicated that Albany was ahead in the game 5-3, but it looked like only 8 innings had been completed.
  18. Dane Pound, Thank you for your response on articles in today's Times Union. At this time, as we near the end of the regular season, I would like to extend my thanks for the wonderful job you have done in running this website. I cannot convey how helpful the information found here has been to me. Despite the surface dismal record of the men's team this season, I have been really excited about their performance. Part of my enthusiasm relates to the efforts put forth by you and others to impart information on the team. Whenever I come to the games -- which is difficult because of the long distance I have to travel -- I feel very informed about what is about to happen. And that advantage makes the game I am viewing much more enjoyable. Best of luck in the rest of the season. I hope you will continue your fine efforts in future seasons.
