Gerardo Suero By Brian Towey

Reporter Brian Towey has a recruiting update on Our Savior New American senior guard Gerardo Suero ...

Gerardo Suero, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound shooting guard from Our Savior New American in Centereach, N.Y., has been showcasing his skills with Mickey Walker's Upstate Basketball Club at the Reebok Summer Championship in Las Vegas while he awaits word on his qualifying status.

"We're waiting to hear back from the (NCAA) Clearinghouse to see if he's going to be qualified or not," said Eric Jaklitsch, an assistant coach at Our Savior New American and one of Suero's coaches with the New York Elite AAU team.

Suero is being monitored by Memphis, DePaul, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Providence, St. John's, Washington St., UCLA, Marquette, and USC, according to Jaklitsch.

"Those are the schools that are actively recruiting him right now," said Jaklitsch.

Suero is not leaning any way, but Memphis could have a shot if he predicts academically. Memphis assistant Orlando Antigua started recruiting Suero when he was an assistant at Pittsburgh, soon after the player arrived at Our Savior in February 2007 from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

A slasher with good body control and the ability to get to the rack, Suero averaged 31 points per game as a senior at Our Savior.

"He's a wing guard who gets to the basket and scores," said Jaklitsch.

I like the trend towards recruiting players who already have a connection to the program.

Jacob and Jon Iati

Suero the same high school as Jamar and Tim

Metcalf and Page going to the same high school

Black and Tartt from the same high school

The two Aussies.

Seems like it will be easier to form a cohesive unit when there is already some familiarity.
