  1. Good job Southies---many of the people picked up on your "defense" chants and the "charlie" chants---the RACC is still too empty to empty to pick up on everything but it will come--just keep coming and keep cheering and I'll get off my hands---
  2. I am not sure what is going on with the Lady Danes. I thought after the first 5 minutes and 15 pts. against UMBC they had exited their slump but after a great opening surge they proceeded to pass and pass and pass until someone had to heave with less than 5 seconds left on the clock. I understand patience but after the first pass in the offensive set you must look to score(even if you don't shoot), otherwise the defense just sits back and waits. I agree with previous comments that Mikus is a keeper. She is a Frosh and throwing up 3's might not be a priority for her. Hutch needs to play as a Senior. Plant your feet, square parallel to the board, go up strong and absorb the foul and then lead the AE in scoring. I have yet to see a team that I think the Lady Danes can't beat!!!
  3. My wife tells me I live in the past but maybe they were the good old days. If students didn't get there early they couldn't get in Page Hall(and I can remember when they couldn't get in University gym). Students walked several blocks to get to the Washington Ave. armory and 25-50% of the students attended the games. Of course we only had 2000 students so we didn't fill the place. But let's face it---we walked because we didn't have cars, no TV's in dorm rooms, refrigerators were not allowed, nor toasters! One phone on each floor--stand in line, please---and no computers. Frosh girls in by 10 and upperclassmen by 11. It is a different world but everyone loves a winner. Put a winner of the foor and THEY WILL COME!!!
  4. Markwood broke wrist aganist SBU and a walk-on(Hight) is playing the point(and seems to be doing quite well). We need to defend the 3's and hit the boards and we could have a nice road win.
  5. The difference in 1st half versus 2nd half points may be in the defense. If we could generate a 1st half pressure defense from half court, we might not have to resort to a full-court 2nd half pressure defense. I think our 1st half defense has been conservative(I might have said lackadaisical) and without a lot of "HELP". The 2nd half press is based on HELP and has been very effective against some teams
  6. At D-1 you have to be ready to play with intensity or you are not going to win. Bing played aggressive team defense and the Lady Danes just didn't come to play. Coach Patterson sent in all kinds of subs hoping for a little energy but it never happened. The freshmen played well but they need veteran leadership.
  7. 4200+ at the Pepsi, 1700+ at the RACC on a Wednesday night is a very good sports showing. The up tempo play of the Danes and the intimacy of the RACC bodes well for the future.
  8. Lady Danes offense sputtered at New Hampshire but I really enjoyed the broadcast of Craig Mroczka(sp?) on WCDB. I am not sure what his sports background is, but for those listening he gives you every detail. I enjoy keeping score to pass the time of a radio braodcast(via the internet) and WCDB is excellent. The mens broadcasters could care less about the details of the game. They never tell you who fouls are on or who is even in the game. I hope in the future WCDB will broadcast the mens games too.
  9. Thanks Reeder for the interesting site. He writes very well and with intellectual sports humor. I agree that thruway tariffs are ridiculously high and I also agree that not to have the ability to pay by credit card is not in the the long term interest of the program. Since you can purchase tickets and season tickets with a credit card, the box office should have a swipe system(even if they lose a few cents per ticket).
  10. Attendance may have been higher for the BU game if the weather forecast was not so dismal. When the rain started at 12:50, we settled for FOX radio. It sounded like a great game. We won from the floor, but lost from the foul line.
  11. Attendance and game good! Parking was not an improvement--I agree with UAalum 72--Parking passes in 1st entrance and pay to park go up the loop. Season ticket entrance was great but after you got in it took longer to get to your seat than before. For us oldtimers walking up to the upper level and then down to our seats in the first few rows makes no sense. Hope someone in the know reads this stream of good suggestions.
  12. We should thank WCDB radio for broadcasting the games with pick-up on the internet for those outside the broadcast range. They did a great job, were very enthusiastic, accurate about a sport I don't think they had ever covered but I don't think it will be the last time we will be able to tune in. As an alumnae I appreciate their efforts and I do tune in to some of their musical programming, which I find very enjoyable.
  13. I was surprised to learn of the the number of off season surgeries to the ladies basketball team. Time will only tell how successful they were. Becky is a huge loss but we are better prepared for such a loss than we were a few years ago. She was great as a Frosh and came back very strong last year after her first surgery. I for one will not forget her gutsy effort to play in Hartford(AE championships) while being very, very ill. Hope she remains at UA and completes her degree.
  14. As much as Siena would like to recognize Albany as less than equal, they still price the tickets on an upper tier to the MAAC. UAlbany tics sell for the same price as Syracuse, Vermont, Manhattan and Marist. Posters are very conservative; I am not, UAlbany by 6 to 10 is a given. Unlike the past, this not a new game for several palyers and we have nothing to loose and Siena has only--everything.
  15. Yes! March 6, 1958--I still have the original program for the game(thanks, mom) and I had a great seat for the game. It was the first of 4 NAIA appearances and Doc's 3rd year of coaching--we coulda, shoulda won.
  16. The key is first post season appearance not NCAA. Answer is Rider in the NAIA. Been there, done that.
  17. No brainer and not really huge! Albany will win this year by minimum of 6 to 10 points. Siena will soon need Albany more than Albany needs Siena. Loudonville is a one horse town(basketball). Albany has great athletics and they know how to party-----which explains why no one goes to the games.
  18. Maybe Mr. Fallon made a contribution over a 5 year period with the University coming up with additional funds. That doesn't mean the field won't become a reality in less than 5 years. Having grown up 50 years ago, 5 miles from a reservation, I hate to see the grass replaced by ashphalt. It knd of takes away from the "bounce of the ball".
  19. The RACC is adequate for AE basketball tournaments based on attendance I have seen at BC and Hartford and Albany definitely has adequate hotel, motel and restaurants to make it a pleasant site. University Gym is a very good Volleyball facility as well. Lax has a grass field which increases the challange but is not in vogue. Decisions are probably made on facilities and can the host get to the finals. Thus we have golf which someone on this board wanted to deep six last year.
  20. If UA "believes" they can win, they will beat Siena this year. It should be one of our easier victories. The AE will be more difficult. Several teams have recruited well and several teams have a lot of talent back. There are going to be some great games at the RACC---hope a few students show up.
  21. At least one Board member saw and played with Dr. Holway. He was 6'2" and played forward. A real student of the game and his long range jumper would have resulted in a lot of three's. Great moves inside and could bring up the ball against the press and very unselfish--if you were open , you got the ball. Closest player to him was All-American Rich Margison but that was many years ago too. Both were great people as well as players.
  22. Name changes have been a traditon. In 4 years of undergraduate study and 1 year of graduate study the current University had 4 name changes---NYSCT at Albany, College of Education at Albany, SUCE at Albany, and SUNY at Albany but EVERYONE still called it State College. Those days are long gone and it is now a UNIVERSITY with a multitude of opportunities, but the SUNY Albany is going to take time for the locals to change to UA or UAlbany. Fortunately, GO DANES has replaced GO PEDS!!
  23. Steve is a confident young man who will not come to Albany in the near future. Like his father, he is a student of the game and will do fine and will have many opportunities from D-III to D-I.
  24. Just a month or so ago someone on this board wanted to deep six tennis & golf. Fortunately the UA ladies of the links ignored the chauvinist and just kept playing. Doc probably showed them the posting for inspiration.
  25. Coach P. had a scholarship last Fall but I thought was looking for a power forward. Without much available after Fall signings, and the future problems at the point probably took the best available. I think Professor overlooked Lyndsey Clark---freshman with a late start but has a great stride to basket and D is good.
