Tourney Question

As most of you well know while I was planning on going to the tourney I am loath to spend another weekend in Bing and was considering staying in Ithaca instead. The 6 pm tip time has me reconsidering that position as it would be easier to stay near Bing. Just curious if there is an official Albany hotel in Bing or are people just sleeping all over town?

 

Also one of the posts on the AE board said the #1 seed gets to pick which time slot on Saturday they want to play-noon or 6 p.m. If that's true I'm curious why they would pick the 6 o'clock start as it gives less time between games on Saturday and Sunday should they advance. Could it have been so people can make the lax home opener at 1 and still make the tournament game?

I think the home team decides when they want to play and everything else is folded in around that.

 

Last year, Binghamton played Albany at noon in the 4 - 5 game. This year it will be Binghamton vs. the 7 seed in the noon game.

Because the game between the eight and nine seeds is at 7pm on Friday, I do not think they would let the number one seed play at noon on Saturday. This would place the winner of the "play-in" game at an unnecessary disadvantage, as the turn-around time would only be around twelve hours.

I suggest if the winner of the play-in game wanted a more convenient schedule in the tournament, they should have played better during the season.

I am not sure how the it was determined between day and evening session but they generally have the higher seeds play earlier in the session than the team they would meet the next day should they advance. Thus the 1-8/9 is played before the 4/5 in the evening session and the 2/7 is played before the 3/6 in the day session.

 

Although us at 6 means someone better stop by my seats before the B-ball game and tell me how much we beat Siena by. I will still be in Bingo for the whole tourny.

Well, I guess that settles it...They would have stuck it to the low seeds.

I guess having home-court advantage isn't enough for a two seed, as they also get preferential time treatment.

Maybe it's time to move the entire tournament to a rotating site basis.

Schools have to bid for the tournament, and they evaluate location, facilities, hotel availability, probably likely attendance (though that didn't keep it from Boston U and Northeastern the years before Bing).

 

 

It won't be at Bing forever.

1980-1987: On-campus, higher seeds.

1988-1990: Hartford

1991-1995: Higher seeds

1996-2001: Delaware

2002-2004: Boston

2005-20??: Binghamton

 

I know that everyone is impressed with Bingo's facilities, so I think they are happy there.... But I do not know about any contracts or obligations or even plans with other sites.

Until UAlbany remedies their concessions, parking problems, adds more chairbacks and draws 3,000-4,000 on a consistent basis, they will never host the tourney.

Boston University hosts next year. They don't draw well but it's a fun place to spend the weekend. After we joined the AE the first three tournaments were in Boston and admittedly I got spoiled.

I had nearly forgotten that BU's (Boston) arena was slightly newer than Bingo's.
