Albany adds Ohio wing forward...

By Van Coleman van@hoopmasters.com

Will Brown and his staff at Albany continue to recruti the Midwest with the addition this week of 6-6 Billy Allen...

According to a source close to the program, the Albany Great Danes have once again dipped into the Midwest and have added a quality wing in 6-6 215-pound Billy Allen from Hamilton, OH this week to their Class of 2007.

Allen has good bounce, and ability to attack hoop off the dribble, that he sets up with a sweet outside jumper from beyond the arc. (40% 3pfg as Junior). He averaged 17.3 points and 7.6 rebounds an outing for Hamilton last season.

He chose Albany over interest from Miami (OH), Dayton, Oakland, Pennsylvania, Princeton, and recently Stanford.

What I find intresting is that todays discussion has been about the TU report about bad grad rates, and we just signed a player who has a 4.0 gpa. Kind of Ironic don't ya think?

Here is a picture of the new guy

2007 TARGET: Billy is considered one of the top 2G’s in Ohio. One recruiting site has Billy as a 3-star

Check this out-

Billy Allen's Hamilton team will play Howard Little's Stoneridge Prep team during the Flyin' to the Hoop National Basketball Invitational on January 15, 2007 in Dayton, Ohio.

Also Billy Allen is listed in the players to watch section (only player from his team) while Howard Little is not (Stoneridge does have 3 other players mentiond though).

Someone should put this guys stats up on the Siena board to show that UA is recruiting both talent and strong students.

My advice is: don't worry about Siena. As of a couple hours ago, few people had even bothered to post to the topic. One of them even commented to the effect that the matter wasn't worth worrying over from the UAlbany standpoint. He's correct in his judgment.

I'm more worried about what kind of effect prospective players and parents of players think about the statistics. And that problem will disappear in the coming years as the current academic success of our athletes comes to the fore.

As others here have noted, UAlbany's current graduation rate and number of athletes who do well in the classroom certainly belies the negative report we witnessed today.

Albany Secures Fine Shooter

by Dave Telep of Scout.com, September 29, 2006 at 6:26pm ET

Billy Allen Profile

Billy Allen, according to a source, is headed to Albany. The 6-foot-6 small forward out of Hamilton High in Ohio, was a big time scorer on the high school level, averaging 17 points. Most schools valued him tremendously as a shooter on the wing with size.

He had interest and offers from Miami-OH, Oakland, Penn and Princeton

From HoopScoop.....

We also have confirmed that 6'6 Billy Allen from Hamilton (H.S.) OH has verbally committed to the University of Albany and we think this is a great catch for the Great Danes, because Allen is one of the best outside shooters in the nation, as his evident by the fact that he shot 40.9% (54-132) from beyond the arc as a high school junior a year ago.  Allen will be ranked in the 250-300 nationally when we publish our Ranking of the Top Players Nationally in the Class of 2007 and he's an excellent student, which explains why he also had schools like Stanford, Dayton, Miami-OH, Pennsylvania, Oakland, and Princeton on on his list.

It's a Great Day to be a Great Dane!!!

Allen led his team in scoring, rebounding and assists last season. No matter what team you're on that pretty impressive. He looks like a great recruit especially considering his prowess in the classroom.

I find the open scholarship thing curious. I'd imagined that the three scholarships would go to Ambrose, James and Allen. If Ambrose or James aren't getting one then would be bringing someone else in. Maybe hold it for a transfer?

Wait until the signing period - I THINK!!!!!! Ambrose ( in school now), James (currently listed as a walk on) and Allen (a HS Sr.) may sign LOI.

That would be an awesome recruiting class remeber Ambrose was listed at 169 by HoopScoop for 2006, Allen has been listed at 315 for this year and James was given 2 stars by Sout.com and drew interest from some excellent programs.

Your talking a PG, and a 2G with tremendous athletic abilities and a Wing with Lillis like skills and a tremendous perimeter shooter.

We return everybody up front.
