UConn

Recommended Posts

I know still early but I've been waiting for this since last March so I figured I'd start this thread.

I was wondering who else is planning on attending the UConn game. After sulking for days about not having the tickets, I was recently surprised by ASP Girl with two tix to the game.

Is there a place Albany people are gathering before the game?

And what do we substitute last year's "laptop" chant with?

Well, as an FYI, you probably dont want to chant anything derogatory in a 10,000 seat on-campus arena filled with students...

On message boards...I will trash people who A) attack and B) pontificate fiction as fact. Sadly, as I age, I dont do much of that anymore unless your name is Ginzo or a certain Binghamton hack...and of course certain members of the Siena faithful!!!

In arenas, I like interesting fun chants...not "BUCKNELL SUCKS" which I heard way too many times the other night.

I'm always a fan of interesting and fun chants too and obviously the "fill-in-the-blank SUCKS" gets old, but I was relatively surprised how (comparatively) few times I heard it Saturday night. While I wasn't specifically counting, I think I only remember maybe 3 or 4 times and none of them lasted too long. Baby steps, baby steps..we'll come around..lol.

Perhaps my ears weren't too sharp, but I also didn't hear that chant very often. I also dislike the chat, and I felt a little embarrassed about the few times I did hear it, especially because I was seated near some nice Bucknell people. It's human to kind of gloss over your own faults, but your ears are likely more sensitive when you or your friends are the target.

My wife and I were seated in different areas of the 'Cue," but she noticed that someone (probably a UAlbany fan) sitting behind the Bucknell bench was escorted out of the arena by security personnel. I hope fans from other schools will be subject to less harrassment this season than last. Fans from other AE schools sometimes had complaints about poor behavior emanating from the stands.

Having said all that, I just reveled at the generally positive attitude the students had at the game. I hope they keep coming back.

Dane96,

I agree with you. One time is too much; on the other hand, if UAlbany is in the process of "weaning away" from that chant, then I respect the progress made.

I think our school can come up with the more creative chants that are possible, and we've proven it before.

I sat in front of some people doing the Bucknell sucks chant, so I can sadly say it was some students. Fortunitly it didn't happen to often, that chant is probably the least creative and it reminds me of a certain Western New York school. Personally I like the UA soccer chant much more I think it is more effective and a lot more positive.

I was also embarassed by the "Bucknell Sucks" chant. It is unimaginative, and represents a kind of "chip on the shoulder " negativism which has unfortunately been a part of the UA student body in the past (I'm an alum, so I can say this). It is also factually incorrect since Bucknell doesn't "suck" as a university or a hoop program.

To be fair, one of the chants in the second half started in response to a "UA Sucks" from a group of Bucknell students. Once we came back in the second half, there was no need to denegrate Bucknell, the refs, or anyone else. All in all, the student sections did a great job making the crowd a significant part of the home court advantage for the Danes.

One of the things I like so much about the "UA... UA, UA, UA" chant is that it is positive, upbeat and shows some institutional pride. Once again, Rome wasn't built in a day, and building a fan base will take a few years. Student energy is the key to making the SEFCU into a "pit" for visiting teams. A critical mass of enthusiastic students is the difference between watching a college basketball game and being part of a college basketball "happening".

I'm interested to see what the turnout will be this Friday. I took part in the Bucknell Sucks chant and will never do so again. Relatively new fan here, learned my lesson! I never take part in A-hole or Bull$#@% chants. To me thats not what college sports should be about as it just sounds terrible, especially if there are kids in the crowd.

So as the mature, intelligent and clever segment of the fan base, we need to lead the way. I really like the way fans at schools like Florida have choreographed chants and songs with their pep bands. We need to develop some good cheers for

UA as well. U A UAUA UA is ok, but we need more. Some of you guys have been to many games in many arenas, help us out here with some suggestions. I don't like the BS, you suck cheers at all. I don't like booing the visitors when they come on the court or are introduced. I would like total silence when those things happen.

Why does "Siena sucks" still sound good in my head?

I do hear you guys on the other stuff.

I personally love the chant where the pep band does the their thing and the fans chant "lets go danes."

Not quite sure how to describe it but i think you guys know what I mean.

Never mind the chants which also bothered me, the thing that bothered me more was the guy who sang the national anthem so loud I swear everyone in the arena heard it. If you want to sing go ahead, just sing at a volume that doesnt interfere with the person perfoming on court. Ticked me off to no end.
