Will Brown visits St. Bonaventure

March 27, 2007 at 1:50 pm by Mark Singelais

University at Albany coach Will Brown and his wife, Jamie, are on the St. Bonaventure campus in Olean today, according to a source close to the couple.

The visit could be a significant step in Brown landing the job as the Bonnies’ next head coach. The source didn’t know whether Brown had received a formal offer.

Brown interviewed for the job in Syracuse on Friday and is believed to be the only remaining candidate to get a second look. It is logical that Jamie, a Ballston Lake native, would want to see the Olean area before making a decision.

The source didn’t know Brown’s itinerary in Olean, but it would give him a chance to meet St. Bonaventure president Sister Margaret Carney, who holds final approval for the hire.

We are moving towards a resolution, one way or the other. Bona will probably offer the job today. McElroy will hopefully have the 'last shot". If Will leaves, I don't think it will because of money. McElroy has already publicly stated he can "match up" whatever Bonnie offers. The new Bing. coach's deal (reported to be $205K/4years) will give further perspective to the negotiations.

Bonaventure is an absolute hole. He would be a fool to take that job. If you think you can successfully recruit city kids to come to school an hour's drive on a two-lane highway from the nearest airport, best of luck to you. The only thing that Bona has going for it is that the league has traditionally been decent, although that's debatable the past couple of years as they had down years.

If he takes the St. Bona job---he will be looking for another one in 4 to 5 years, Not a good move, even if for the perceived step up. All of those who said no thanks to St. Bona are the smart ones. let's hope Coach Brown is one of them. If he does move on for the $$ and perceived step up, he needs to say---"Thank You, Jamar!" Brown will never be as hot as he is now.

Today's T-U article has a source saying Will was 'disappointed' in McElroy's initial offer. Wyland said last night they would probably meet again Thursday.

I think McElroy has one more shot. If Will has not already decided to go. McElroy needs to put the money where the mouth is. Will should be the highest paid coach in America East.

You are asking for Dr.McElroy to basically double coach Browns salary. I don't think it's ever gonna happen(EDIT: I can't see how it happens in one year, not saying he will never get to that pay scale). Current base is 163K and Denise Wolff makes base 300K, Steve Piekell is at 267K (another SUNY school). Even if they give him 250K it's a hell of a raise from 163K. It's kind of crazy that the new BUNY coach is making 204K and SB coach making 267K and coach Brown is at 163K. What has Piekell done to warrant that kind of salary? Man, the more you look at numbers the less sense this whole thing makes. Coach certainly needs to be paid a competitive wage, I'm just not sure how you get there in one year from 163K to where he should probably be.

Roger Whyland is such a loser! He just took to task all the other media outlets for misreporting on the Brown thing but infect he was the one who had to retract his take on Will already being offered on Monday or Tuesday (can't remember). Also, said that he was the first to report that Will was on campus, also a blatant lie taking credit for something he didn't do. It was Mark who was the first one out with that tidbit.

Man...he sucks!
