Flying to Hawaii doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me.  I get wanting to get an FBS team on the schedule, but Hawaii???

Hawai'i pays travel and room expenses, and we're allowed to schedule an extra game (home or another money game) if we want to. Without that incentive, how could they get a non-conference home game? Plus, a fun road trip for fans

That changes things.  We have friends whose son played for Hawaii and their budget sounded horrible and wouldn't have imagined they could spring for that sort of trip.

Not just a fun trip for the fans who will travel but for the players. If I was a player, I'd rather play in Hawaii than, say, the midwest somewhere.

Per FB schedules the 2023  Fordham game has been moved to Week Zero, August 26, so we'll have a game under our belts before the Hawai'i  game on Sept. 2

2021 Syracuse game has been moved to 9/18. On 9/4 we instead travel to a tougher team - North Dakota State.

North Dakota State will host UAlbany at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D., on September 4, 2021. The Bison will pay the Great Danes a $250,000 guarantee for the contest, according to the copy of the contract.

How much does it cost for us to go to a place like ND? Or HI? I'd imagine we burn a very good chunk of that...

Between $40,000 to $50,000.  Charter plane (737-600) is $10,000 -$15,000. One night stay for 60 rooms @ $200 is $12,000.  Food: three meals / plane catering @ 100 people (athletes, coaches, adminstrators, others) $12,000.  On ground incidentals, transporting equipment to ND, ground transportation for team and others: $8000 to $10,000.  The goal is always to net about 75%..... This is for North Dakota.
