The Budget Shaft

I just want to be clear on one thing to all...after scrubbing the numbers AGAIN last night...the numbers above are off...by a lot. The numbers I scrubbed show:

a. Albany- 445m

b. Binghamton- 374.4m

c. Buffalo- 703.1m

d. Stony Brook- 873m

I am going to rescrub this weekend...but those seem to be the numbers. It is the second time I ran them...and they came out exactly the same.

You have to add in Non-Personal and Personal Service monies being given by the state for every day running of the universities. I do not think others included that in the accounting.

Either way, the message has remained the same: EQUAL ACCESS TO ROCKEFELLER'S DREAM-- FOUR FLAGSHIPS!

WHY ARE YOU APOLOGIZING-- As another poster mentioned, these numbers are obtuse. Shoot, I would rather take the Nevada Bar Exam...without studying...then sit here and try to make sense of these numbers for another day.

One only has to look at SB and BU websites to see how they feel about the budget/direction they are moving. They are out there doing what ever they can to further entrench themselves as the two flagship schools.....UA has been quiet because we are not! Who knows if any of this can be changed but we have to try.

It's a bit of heresay, but is coming from someone who isn't the gossiper/sneak info type. Well-placed University employees told him that the Governor's budget includes money for both our Campus Center and Business Building. I obviously have no numbers to show (perhaps it's part of $1+ billion in campital money?), but I said to him that it sucks that the budget didn't include stadium money..his response was 'at least we got the CC and business building..I was like 'WHAT??'..haha.

It'll be interesting to see it all play out.

Would this person KNOW that funding for the business building was actually included, or is he just speculating and making an educated guess?

With all of the history behind the University Centers and the investment into these four pillars of SUNY.... how can someone and a group of education specialists come out and exclude two of them, when considering Flagship status?

I guess because they don't know what Flagship status actually means. And they don't realize the ngative impacts this will have on the SUNY system as a whole, specifically the other two University Centers.

There are alot of ways this will affect UAlbany.... and many have been mentioned.

A Non Flagship Label: How about the attractiveness for New York teens getting ready to apply to schools.... would they pick a SUNY non-flagship school before a SUNY flagship school? Most of them, no.

Athletic Facilities: Would New York teens, boys and girls getting ready to apply to schools, pick a SUNY non-flagship school with athletic facilities that resemble a high school, or will they pick a SUNY flagship with Division I quality athletic facilities?

UAlbany Enrollment: the people deciding the futures of the University centers have apparently not seen that UAlbany's enrollment applications have skyrocketed in this decade... I guess they want to stomp all over that, because those enrollment numbers will be dwindling rapidly if we are categorized as second rate.

Blah, blah, blah....... this will hurt in many, many ways.

A very important contact to add:

UAlbany Interim President George M. Philip:

Office of the President

George M. Philip

Interim President

University Hall, Room 302

(518) 956-8010

presmail@uamail.albany.edu

He needs to step up to the plate, both publicly and privately.

and

Interim Provost Susan D. Phillips

Office of the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs

Susan D. Phillips

Interim Provost

University Hall, Room 308

(518) 956-8030

sdphil@uamail.albany.edu

By the way, Dr. M stepped up to the plate during the game last night, saying at half time, that he is confident that UAlbany will not be left out or forgotten when it comes budget time.... that with all of the AD success over the last 8 years, the University deserves it and has earned it.

From what I heard, nothing of importance.

She talked about the athleticism of the cheerleaders.

I heard both interviews. Provost said nothing about the budget. Wyland then interviewed Dr. M and asked specifically about the budget and the stadium. He said something along the lines of there is still a lot of time before the budget is complete and he is very optimistic and talked about the performance of the athletic department and deserving more. Also said something like, "there still being 4 months left so I'm not worried."

Well, for what it's worth, I certainly believe him. He has a daily professional relationship with a person who was briefed in meetings about what was included in the budget for UAlbany. He said that's what the person in the meeting was told.

I was at the Assembly Higher Ed Committee's Public Hearing on the Commission on Higher Education's preliminary report today, where Philip was one who testified. Though the hearing was about the CHE report, Philip closed his remarks by saying "Oh behalf of the University at Albany and the 3 three other flagship university centers..", which got a chuckle from Chairwoman Glick. The President of Upstate Medical was next to testify and light-heartedly started off with something to the extent of "I won't be asking for a stadium"..which got an even bigger chuckle.

It seems to me that your information might be on the mark. We all hope so.. Any new expansion is a good good thing.

Was there talk or comment from Interim President Philip about the flagship designation? I'd really like to know what he said during the hearing.

Was there talk or comment from others concerning the naming of Buffalo and stony brook flagships, but not Albany?

What was the main gist of the hearing?
