2011-10 Joint Budget ----3/27/11

· UB 2020: The Governor has also agreed to hold a summit with stakeholders to discuss how to make UB 2020 a reality

I am particularly pleased with Governor Cuomo's commitment to making UB2020 a reality, which will bring jobs and hope to Western New York, as well as improvements to the other university centers, which are important priorities of our Senate Republican conference. Today's developments ensure we are moving full speed ahead to an on-time budget."

Also from twitter:

CapitalTonight Capital Tonight UB2020 was last issue in budget to get closed down, accding to gov. $130 m economic devel cash for regional councils NOT taken from legis.

This is a UB only measure...correct? Any indication on when UA would have the same benefits to chart their own course?

Sad to see that UB was the only one that get's to benefit while the rest of us are stuck in mud.

It's not a UB only measure, as far as the last reports. The other 3 centers were worked in for reforms. If it develops as UB only, I'd be shocked.

Buffalo News Albany beat writer yesterday:

"The Senate plan would let the University at Buffalo, along with SUNY campus centers in Binghamton, Stony Brook and Albany, raise tuition on an annual basis and keep the money for campus operating expenses instead of giving most of the proceeds to the state’s general fund."

Per the Buffalo News this afternoon:

"The budget will not include the UB2020 plan to fund the University of Buffalo's massive downtown development effort, but Cuomo said he will convene a summit to try to get the proposal approved before the end of the legislative session in June.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, whose Democratic conference opposed the UB2020 plan, said he would meet with the new incoming UB president and said the Assembly will embrace a plan to make UB "the center of economic growth for the city of Buffalo and Western New York."

Will school drop a rung?

Some Capital Region leaders fear UAlbany will drop to second-tier status; Cuomo hasn't invited anyone from local campus to summit

Very dangerous for both UAlbany and the Capitol District. Silence is acceptance. Second tier here we come unless our politicians step.

Too little too late from the Albany area reps IMO.

The writing has been on the wall for years. Even we recognized the direct this was going in it at least 2 years ago.

Seems like a face-saving measure now and not a genuiune attempt to make anything better.

I agree. We've talked about UB2020 on this site for years.... Years and years we talked about UAlbany not advocating, not leading, not even following. UAlbany and the Capitol District have been happy to hand flagship status to Buffalo and Stony Brook. I hope I'm wrong but we may be too late.

You would think nanocollege would loose a lot of luster/props/money if UA became a second teir university. With the money the state has invested and the private sector investment potential, you would think nanocollege would not allow the state to snub UA?????????????

Anybody listen to Vandenburgh this morning? His take was that UAlbany is not in a position to complain now because it has been running this "nanoscam" on the taxpayers for many years, and the other public universities have gotten wise to the "scam" and want in.

Not sure exactly what the scam is, but it is true - Nano is the biggest public-private partnership in the SUNY system. Its exactly what others hope to emulate. The difference is they shouldn't have to jump through the legisltive hoops we had to get this done.

If the university wants to do it, it should be there perogative and their risk.
