That's good news for next year.

Either way he'll be very young and inexperienced...it will take time.

He also played at a very high level in HS so that will help. Its always a jump, but the jump is much easier when you come from an area like the North Jersey Catholic School League (Paramus Catholic, Don Bosco, etc..)

Not to mention if the rumors are true, he's already on that level. The only thing we'll likely see is an uptick in TO's due to inexperience...but I can't imagine it'll be like going from 3 to 30. He'll likely make up for it in better percentages, etc.

Can someone shed light on what a Red Shirt Sr./Jr./So. means? Our team is loaded with them. For example Jake Meek is a Red Shirt Sr, does that mean he has another year if he chooses?

If it's anything like basketball...a red shirt senior means he is a senior who was at some point red shirted meaning he is out of eligibility otherwise he'd be a redshirted junior. It has little bearing on their academic progress.

For example, if Shanley does not play this year at all, is tagged as redshirting (sitting out) this year, and plays next year....

he will be considered an redshirt freshman athlete during next season (next year).

Although he will be a sophomore academically next year.... it is not related to athletics

That is my understanding...

Do we know he's officially redshirting this year?

I believe the answer is yes.

I spoke to someone in the athletics department at The Holy Cross game and a lot of the freshmen (including Shanley) are officially red shirting - they were standing on the sideline during the game in street clothes (UA polos and khakis). There are also some freshmen that dress for the games and they can still redshirt if they don't play (Croskey, Ritter and a few others) they are backups that will play if needed during the season.
