SOURCES: UAlbany-Siena basketball close to reaching deal

According to sources, the University at Albany and Siena men's basketball team is close to reaching an agreement to renew their annual basketball rivalry. The finalized contract is expected to be completed within the next week and a half.

The previous contract had expired after this year's game, a December 13 matchup that saw the Great Danes down Siena 77-68 in front of a jam packed crowd at the Times Union Center.

It's been a long road to a renewed rivalry for the two programs, which have squared off in a cross-town battle every year since 2001-02, with heated words and arguments from both sides since the start of this last college hoops season. But now, it seems at least, the two sides have worked through, at least some, of that animosity.

The projected agreement will bring the matchup back to the Times Union Center twice in the next three seasons, but will, finally, allow UAlbany to host the rivalry game at SEFCU Arena, something Great Danes coach Will Brown has been fighting for consistently over the past few seasons. Brown has previously made it well known that he would not be opposed to ending the rivalry if a game was not played at SEFCU Arena.

Both Brown and Siena coach Jimmy Patsos spoke at length about the future of the game in December and even discussed the option of a set date every season to make the usual-hectic job of scheduling the matchup that much easier. You can read that December article here.

It's important to remember that nothing is officially official yet. UAlbany athletic director Mark Benson is in New Hampshire for the America East basketball coaches meetings and nothing is expected to be announced until, at least, the end of the week. Still, it's a step in the right rivalry direction.

And we better be careful with the way tickets are given out for the potential home game at SEFCU. I can easily see a 60/40 split if those tickets are released to public. Be careful in what you wish for. I would have just canceled the thing.

I see that, but reading that it sounds like a 2 for 1 and no low mid major team deserves a 2 for 1 from us.

To me it sounds like a 2-1. Article would have mentioned a neutral game if that was a key detail...source wouldn't have left that out IMO.

Sounds like we're getting little brother'd again. Even though we're the little brother that is now dunking all over the bigger brother cause we hit our growth spurt and are no longer 5" shorter.

EDIT: As usual, Siena fans are already crying about the fact that 6-7 thousand people won't be able to attend because of the size of SEFCU. Man I can't stand those fans. I don't find it hard to be a friend with a coworker who is a casual fan and might just go to that one game a year, but I will definitely find it hard to be a friend with someone who is a die hard LCC fan if I ever have to work with one. They are ridiculous.

They are just mad because they know in the future that Siena is never going to have this game at the TUC every year ever again.

Not to mention, LCC status isn't what they think. They either had to admit they can't compete with Albany or make concessions. Whether they made enough concessions , time will tell. But it had to start somewhere.

It's a negotiation, anyone who has done contract negotiations knows that both sides get something but, neither leave with everything they want. If the Siena AD agreed to a four year 1:1 series the Siena season ticket base would call for his head.

Do UA fans really want a game at Sefcu so bad where it ends up a 2 for 1????

I'd be calling for our ADs head if it's a 2 for 1! Just end it.
