[MBB] Game #25: 2/13/19 - 7:00PM vs UMass-Lowell

I'd run de Sousa, Hanks, Healey, Rizzuto and lulka out there till their tongue was hanging out. They are the only 5 that matter...eapecially De Sousa... Guy had 3 blocks today, hit a 3. His development and all their development is absolutely critical. Wish we had a pg to groom... I'd run him out there as well.

What's left of this very bad season should be devoted to their development.

Today wasn't only a step back... Today the entire program ran backwards.

Got my grocery shopping done sooner than I thought. Left with about 10 minutes left. Disastrous night.

If I witnessed that debacle back in my day, I would have made a beeline to Sutters for a couple cold ones (and the best burger and fries ever).  The youngins here may not have had the pleasure.  Truly missed I'm sure.

So much for my hopes of us rebounding better this game. The whole box score should just say "DNP - team decision"

Still, not making long-term decisions based on short term results.

Lutete is a transfer from Radford. Kind of wished we'd given him a call when he was looking to leave Radford.

Career high for Adam Lulka. Not sure why we don't go inside with the ball more against UML since they essentially play 4 guards and a forward.

We played ZERO D. Like, NONE. ZILCH. NADA. ZIPPO.

Agree with DP....definitely a "DNP - team decision".

Out rebounded by 20+ and allowed them to shoot 57% while shooting 37% ourselves. You will lose 1000 out of 1000 games with that effort.

Lost in my annoyance earlier, I forgot to say Duquette is doing an awesome job at UML. They were "supposed" to be down this year after losing Jahad Thomas. Bodes well for the strength of the conference if he can get UML playing well, Odom at UMBC, combined with Vermont and Stony Brook not stinking.

Bad shooting and no offensive rebounding was the story.

Regarding rebounding: we simply are not in position. Lowell had three or more crashing versus our one, typically on the short side of the rim. Our offense has a lot of wasted motion around the perimeter. 3 point shooting was maybe 50-50 of reasonable open shots versus being defended. But.. no one following shots or having bigs to rebound. Definitely a humbling game.

Guess what? The lanes and underneath was open. Lulka did a good job. Malachi showed his talent on defense. He made a 3 and also made one strong move to the hoop. Rizzutto looked like he was in the dog house on offense, relegated to a corner and not part of the action. Again, too much waste at the perimeter. BTW- it is the same pattern we use on nearly all games. At D1, the opponent has the book. An aside, the placing of Clark at the post in the SBU game was creative.

Not to put too much pressure on the team; but in many ways this is the biggest game of the year and very well could define the season one way or the other. OC was tough; but won 2 of last 3 and showed progress. Then ran into a buzz saw vt, and regressed to 0-5 in AmEast. Two OT loses and a 3 game win streak; and once again looked to be headed in the right direction. Then vt again, but IMHO we competed and were really in the game except for a 10 minute stretch in the second half where we looked like vt1. If this time we can learn from the vt. game and continue to move forward and get better, I think we will be OK the rest of the way. Not saying we will win the AmEast and there still may be some bumps; but a win tomorrow will be BIG!

Its ALL my fault. I put TOO much pressure on the team. I did not think that they actually read this stuff. I guess they did, because they certainly played like they HOPED they'd win; instead of like the KNEW they'd win. I take full responsibility . {I know don't flatter myself.} Coach says chalk it up just a BAD outing. Maybe it is time to admit, it is just a BAD team.........

The MAAC has bad teams. We're simply a bottom tier team in our league (I guess that is bad too). 5-11 or 6-10 is probably a best case scenario but that requires beating Maine and BU and the road and beating UNH at home. Drop one of those, and we need to take one from HU or UMBC to reach 6-10.

That was so brutal and SUCH a lazy effort that honestly even the morning after I'm completely at a loss. This team HAS been much better on the defensive end, effort was there even in OT loss to SBU and UBMC. I don't buy that they got cocky and that they only played well against the drags of the AE. They fought like hell against UMBC and SBU #2 and #3...yesterday they didn't want any part of being in that game on either end. That is hugely disappointing and upsetting to witness.

If they don't come out flying on Sunday at Maine then wrap the season...if they have any pride they will come breathing fire on Sunday. Will be interesting to see how they respond.

Damn not even wanting to be there is worse than being a bit too cocky.

I got to the game a little late last night. I think they were losing 11-4 at the time. As soon as we walked through the door, my 9 year old looked at me and said that it "felt weird" in the gym. I have said that in the past when I had an anxious feeling, or the environment just wasn't right, so he got that from me. By the time I sat down, I knew exactly what he meant. The air pressure was off, the sound of the crowd was off, and most definitely the players were off.

I ended up staying till the final horn, but I have to say: I almost walked out early with about 4 minutes left for the first time in over a decade of attending every game possible. The team just didn't have "it" last night.

A few thoughts:

  • Lauderdale checked in during the first half and saw like 30 seconds of time. Not sure he was ever in again that I noticed. What was that about?
  • If the long ball isn't falling, why do they keep chucking? I know shooters have to shoot themselves out of a funk, but that was crazy last night.
  • DeSousa looked pretty good for the most part last night, especially with his length on defense. He might be an actual shot blocker for the team. There was one play where he tried to force a bounce pass down low in the first half and it was stolen. Brown took him out immediately and sat him for almost the rest of the half. It felt like a Patsos play where the second someone made a mistake he was out. That is no way to build confidence in young players.

I still have high hopes for this squad. I don't think they are a bunch of non-D1 players as others have posted. There is a lot of talent top to bottom. They just need to figure out something to change the offensive and defensive scheme, because Will Brown grind doesn't work with the horses the team has.
