The Buffalo News: Brown high on SBU's list

Recommended Posts

The St. Bona job has become one of those D1 jobs that devours coaches. It is increasing difficult for them to recruit, partly due to their remote location. I think if approached, it would be smart to take a pass on this one..

Not to mention that area of upstate NY is depressed economically. Albany and this area is doing a lot better as compared to anywhere else upstate, IMHO. At least that would be a factor for me ... .

Outside of those who WANT a Franciscan education, who really wants to be basically in the middle of nowhere? I was out that way several months back and outside the Indian casino in Seneca not much is happening. Yes, it's an hour and change from Buffalo (if you're somewhat lucky) and are a few hours from Toronto and Cleveland, but its boring as hell out there.

Outside Wegmans (which, depending on who you ask, the Golubs of Price Chopper fame may or may not have tried to keep from expanding east of I-81 in New York), the nearness of Canada, two pro sports teams (one which gets poor support and whose future may be in doubt), and good regional cuisine, you're right. Then again, if Buffalo was the capital, would the equation be reversed?

Brown would be BEYOND foolish to take it. Let's all chant "Please stay" to the tune of the "UA UA-UA-UA" chant. :D

Moreover, just because a school expresses interest in Brown, doesn't mean that Brown is out the door here. There will be plenty of schools to come knocking in the future for Brown, and of course a school like St. B. is interested in Brown and Vermont's coach--- why wouldn't they be?

The Buffalo article seems to focus more on Brown than Lonergan. Anyone have an idea why it is so?

1) Does Brown's longer tenure have anything to do with the extra focus?

2) Is Brown any more attractive to the Bonnies than Lonergan?

3) Has Brown indicated more of an interest in the job than Lonergan?

I find the focus strange but interesting.

I would certainly be surprised if Brown would consider the Bonnies job. I can think of a half dozen better jobs out there than the lowly Bonnies. It is an honor for Brown that schools have him on their radar even with only one NCAA (hopefully 2 after tomorrow) appearance. I think his stock would rise further if the Danes get to the dance next season without Jamar. It would show Brown can get there without a 2-time POY and that his recruiting is solid to replace a player like Jamar with a strong nucleus.

A huge problem if Brown takes a job elsewhere after this season. Raffa would be able to get out of his commitment. With the kind of season he has had, he may have interest from a higher mid-major school who may have past on him earlier. Plenty of solid D1 teams in the Philly area that still may a scholarship open. Brown leaving would set the program back several years.

Hopefully this is just the media throwing names out and that Will has not even been contacted. He has better things to worry about in the near future.

At this point it's pure speculation, if the question hasn't been asked yet by reporters it will be soon. Hopefully he'll come out and reaffirm his desire to stay here. If another NCAA birth is achieved any chance they rework the deal again to reward him? I seem to remember that his deal has a good chunk of change tied to accomplishments like NIT, NCAA's etc. in addition to the base salary, but perhaps they will up the base salary. I agree, losing him at this juncture would be painful as we have just established root in the D1 world. It's an unfortunate reality that as he continues to be sucessfull these types of rumors will only escalate. The same goes for Loni!

He could make a lot more money at St. Bona, but what are you going to spend it on in Olean?

(Or as SI said about some Tenn. Titan FB player who signed for $5M, how many fishing lures can you buy at Walmart?}

That argument doesnt flush. You make 300k for 4 years...after taxes, expenses and the what not, you probably bank 100-120k a year. 400k in various investments...and your family is well on its way to retirement, college, etc.

The fact that it is a dead end job in a has been league....that is why SBU is a bad choice.

Other A-Ten schools...you have to respect if he jumped ship.

Olean has a Walmart? When did that happen?

I wouldn’t worry about it. SBU only paid current coach Soloman 169K a year. I’m not sure the Bonnies have the resources to put together a guaranteed 4 year deal for 1.5 million and that’s what it would take for Brown to even give the Bonnies job a sniff. Brown or Lonergan would be crazy to go to SBU. The Bonnies really are under the gun in the A10, they are by far the smallest budget team in that conference. The Bonnies job has been a coach’s graveyard the last 25 years (other than Baron who had 4 good year and beat feet to a conference rival)

Both can eventually do better by staying in their current situation
