UA vs SBU

UAlum72 mentioned this at the game and I thought it was a funny idea. If they players have to run suicides for every percentage point their opponent shoots over 40% maybe the coaches should run suicides for every percentage point when they hold their opponent under 40%. They're already wearing the sneakers for it.

Great crowd tonight, I thought the students were terrific. A little malaise set in during the second half but understandable. One note, in a tight game you can't be doing the wave while we're shooting free throws! Luckily we had a big cushion tonight.

Ambrose Starts and I'm really excited until he picks up his second foul about 90 seconds into the game. Have I mentioned freshman guards (except Martin) drive me crazy. Hopefully he can keep himself on the floor because I (and I'm sure others) really would like to see what he can do.

Did Brent really go 1-11 from outside the arc? If he hits his normal percentage we win that game by 30.

Stony Brook looks like it can't wait for the season to end.

Haha, it wasn't so surprising that Brent went 1-11 from behind the arc...what was surprising is that a guy who is 6'10...went 1-11 in the entire game...and that all 11 of those shots were from beyond 20 feet away...he plays like he's 5'4. Lillis and B-Con looked great tonight, Martin is fun to watch...we need to hold this momentum until the 20th.

Regarding the Wave during free throws, one of the few annoying things about BPG is that it attracts many students that don't give a hang about basketball. Another thing I notice is the constant "coming and going" in the student sections. It's a basketball game, not a bloody tea party (although it does have a bit of the tea party atmosphere). The overall game knowledge of the crowd takes a dip come Growl time.

I agree about Brent. I don't mind him shooting some threes because he has been known to make them, but if he can get a few shots in from inside it always helps. He has shown his capability of doing this on occasion, so it's a bit exasperating when all he takes is threes.

The overall defensive effort was much better and good to see that we had only 12 turnovers and 13 steals! Granted it's Stony Brook, but hopefully the guys have some confidence and can replicate this type of effort going down the stretch.

Peace out,

S€

Did anyone else's eyes bug out when Timmy was announced in the starting lineup? I was glad to see it but I was like WOW! Timmy must be turning things around in practice and he looked good out there but for a few mistakes losing the ball. He definitely looks like he's starting to get it on D, I can't remember him being beat like early on in the year where he would routinely be caught out of position.

Brent is undoubtedly in a tough stretch. I'm not sure whats going on with him. Poor kid can't buy a bucket! Shooters have to keep shooting to get their shot back, all of his shots that I could see were wide open so they weren't bad shots, he simply can't hit.

The crowd was awesome, a little quiet to start the second half but things ramped back up. Great point about the wave during FT's and please how hard is it to synchronize the D-Fence chants. There's like 3 of them going on at any given time in the arena. Students in either sections should work with each other. I thought the alternating UA chants were pretty awesome. By far the best chant all game.

Let's hope the team can put a couple of good games together, the effort was solid yesterday.

People have to realize that against teams that zone all the time it Brent's job to spread the zone by staying on the perimeter which opens the interior of the zone for Lillis and Connelly.

Of Brent's 11 threes atleast 8 were clear wideopen looks. I would expect Brent to knock down atleast 4 or 5 of them. He just couldn't get them to drop.

In the previous Stony Brook game and the Hartford game ( both play almost exclusive zones) Brent was 10-20 from three (SBU 6-12 UH 4-8). So, Brent's taking 11 last night wasn't a bad idea, hitting 1 of 11 was not pretty.

I for one thought I saw a little more pep in Brent's step, he was going after rebounds (5), stepping in for charges and had 3 assists and 0 turnovers in his 26 minutes.

Couldn't agree more. He blocked a shot (and honestly I thought 2), tipped a couple of balls, just very active.

As for the shooting from outside the arc. That's what he is, was and always will be. 5'4" or 7', Brent is a three point specialist that gives you some rebounding. Through most of his career he has been more consistent than lately. Feet bothering him? Mental? Who knows. Clearly if he is on the court and has an open look he should take it, slump or not. If not, he offers very little on the offensive end.

I agree with you Patch, shooters must continue to take open shots and eventually they will start to fall. I don't have a problem with him trying to shoot himself out of his slump. Especially since we could afford a miss or two as we had SB contained. At this point, Brent is what he is you can't rework his game and make him a post player. He is what he is.

The one thing I did forget to point out is that I thought Josh played SPECTACULAR off the ball defense on Lucas. His ball denial was some of the best I've seen all season, he simply wouldn't let Lucas get the ball. It was very obvious why he has the nickname "scrap".

Fun player to watch-- though I would like to start seeing him STOP dribbling through double and triple teams. Coach rightfully pulled him (and then put him right back in about 2min later) when he tried to dribble through FOUR guys in the paint late in the 2nd. He has confidence that he can do this...and i like that attitude...but this is Big Boy hoop...and rarely can you dribble through people. He, is going to be VERY good. My group stated, and I like the term, that Josh had the "shakeability" factor-- He moves his hips very well...just shaking them around constantly to throw the defender off.

Timmy A-- yes, my eyes bugged when I saw that. Sadly, he got nailed for the two fouls quickly...because in that short run he played well. Second half, picking up a third 10 seconds in...and then trying to dribble through three guys did not sit well with Will...and I think my group FINALLY saw what others meant by Tim still needs to understand the game. That being said, you can see Will was not mad...rather frustrated with the situation...and immediately grabbed Tim who seemed to agree/concur with the fact that he cant pickup that quick third...and dribble through guys. He is starting to come around...and I hear that in practice it can be seen as well...and that is good for Timmy and the Danes.

BTW, according to Coach, Timmy has done enough to earn the start again vs. New Hampshire.

Anyone else just want to kill Ricky Lucas for fouling Iati right when he was about to tap the ball forward for a Timmy A. breakaway that would have resulted in some crazy dunk? After the foul, Beauford grabbed Timmy as they were walking up court and started laughing. Not sure what was said, but I am sure it went something like "man, your eyes must have lit up on that...glad you didnt throw it down on us." You can see both laughing their faces off.

Good moment.

Another-- Holy Gifford- Kid is getting better...and where did he get the nice turn, face up, 12 foot jumper? Kid is a cult hero on campus. I talked to a person who knows him well and I was told the students love the kid...and he is a beast in the weight room compared to last year. Good to see the continuing progress. Loved the GIFFORD chants.

From personal experience...its tough to coordinate the Defense chant...because of simple physics...the speed of sound. The one student section doesn't hear the other student section saying it until a split second later....and they think they're on cue...but they are delayed. So when you're sitting in the middle, you think it sounds off...but both student sections think it sounds accurate.

What a great Groundhog Day. Danes men and women win and the green rivals (Binghamton, Siena, Vermont) all lose. Let's hope the Bill Murray magic rubs off and we can repeat Groundhog Day for the next 6 weeks or so.

What a great birthday. (Yes, I did see my shadow.) To think that all those great things happened on one day. (Now, if the Giants could only win today, this weekend would be perfect!)

As far as the roaming students are concerned, I have noticed that phenomenon as well. You see it all the time at high school basketball games, where the game itself is only a piece - a small one, at that - of the whole experience. Maybe I did it myself when I saw my first Great Dane game about 40 years ago.

We should realize that the BPG is a great occasion to snag newcomers into Great Dane Nation. Although there was nothing like a BPG back in my day, some caring soul introduced me to Doc Sauers and men's basketball, and it's still wonderful to be a fan in the present.

Nice game, especially the first half.

Sounds like a nice crowd as well. Wish I could have been present. Hope this game gets the team going.

Now we are 2-3 versus SBU this season. The only bad game was out in Olean.

Sorry, the court is only 94 feet long, sound travels at 1100 feet/second, so the time lag should be unnoticeable at less than 1/10 second. Unless sound travels slower in the RACC than any other place on the face of the earth. (Thanks Cousin Vinnie)
