Potential Presidents interviewed today

Yes, he is on the search committee. I'm sure he's pointing out that the University needs an athletic supporter as well as an academic supporter in our new president.

Let's hope this thing gets done NOW. And the new president gets to work this semester.

President Sethna of West Georgia is one of my top 2 picks.

President Sethna could bring a lot to UAlbany. He's been part of the stadium planning process at West Georgia. They have been doing it right over there.

He also has a Columbia PhD in Marketing, which will help in selling the school (and stadium). To top it all off he has a degree from the MIT of India so he gets Albany Nano. What more could you want?

Here's an interesting link from the campus of one of the presidential candidates

I posted that a while back in one of my rants about our horrendous marketing for the stadium project. I didn't put it together before now, but I just did a quick search and found that Sethna has really be influential in getting the West Georgia stadium project up and running.

Would we all love to see this on our campus?

The UW-Oshlosh Chancellor isn't my preferred potential president but I did notice that UW-Oshkosh is working on expanding their D3 Football stadium... which is certainly nicer than University field.

My concern with most of these 5 candidates is that they don't come from the flagship campus. The one exception is Nebraska-Lincoln. That is 100% flagship. I want a fighter in our next president. I don't want someone with an acceptance of I'm fine with being a second tier university. West Georgia, UW-Oshkosh and Florida International are not flagships. I hope if they do come from a lesser campus, they will be a scrapper that feels UA is the flagship campus they always wanted.

I noticed that article. That is the second article on Wells. I haven't seen any press reports on the other 4 candidates. Wells makes me nervous because this is his second attempt to leave Oshkosh in the past few years. We need someone to stay at least 10 years. Wells also tried to get into the Penn State system. We don't need him jumping ship.

I know West Georgia isn't much but I like the president. Of course, I haven't heard him speak and having a good debater and being persuasive is important. I like that guy's marketing and business knowledge. He has a strong science background (aka Albany Nano). His campus is building a football stadium. I don't know if he's supporting it but at least he isn't fighting it. Lastly, he made the 100 most important Georgians list. Atlanta is a big city. We don't need to go to Carrolton unless he's real good.

God I hope they announce someone soon.

At this point, I think we need to trust those who are intricately involved in the hiring process. We can read all the news clippings or bio information we want, but we are not there interviewing them. If I'm not mistaken weren't allot of these folks the same ones who hired Pres. Hall? You gotta trust that they will do the right thing for this University.

I'd like to see someone with name recognition; someone who can bring in the $$$. Condaleeza Rice? (just throwing that out there and no idea even why yet)

HHMMM lets see -

the Gov is a Democrat

both houses of the legislature are under the control of the Dems

The AG both US senators and the Comptroller - all Dems

And you suggest a former cabinet member from the W presidency to lead UA?

you have got to be kidding

The ASP is saying the West Georgia president is the leading candidate.

"Beheruz Sethna was a hands down favorite among some of the different groups of people that met all [the] candidates, including myself," the source said. "After that, there was no clear 2nd, 3rd, 4th [or] 5th choice."

I didn't like the part of the ASP story regarding candidates dropping out because their confidentiality had been comprimised by the TU. We need to finish this process ASAP.

I am pleased to provide you with an update on the search for the next

President of the University at Albany.

In my last update I explained to you in broad outline the forthcoming

interview process and the need for confidentiality and discretion. More

specifically, the Search Committee concluded that it was vital to have a

process that would allow for a wide cross section of the University

Community to meet with "short-list" candidates while preserving their

confidentiality in the search. This decision was not an easy one to

reach and it was taken only after full exploration of all alternatives

and consideration of the realities of a highly competitive market for

top presidential candidates. The goal of our undertaking was to achieve

the delicate balance between inclusiveness of campus constituencies and

conditions that would convince these high caliber candidates to move

forward.

The Search Committee's plan entailed an intensive interview schedule for

each candidate that involved broad participation by members of the

University Community, including representatives of the University Senate

Executive Committee, Distinguished Professors, faculty, students,

Collins Fellows, labor unions, and of campus groups such as the

University Commission on Diversity and Affirmative Action, Black Faculty

and Staff Association, Alianza Latina, administrative groups such as the

Council of Deans, Vice Presidents and Senior Staff, and Interim

President Philip, and representatives from external groups including the

UA Foundation, Alumni Association, Benevolent Association, and

University Council. All participants in the interviews were invited to

provide feedback to the Search Committee. While the desired

confidentiality of the process was not preserved due to an unfortunate

breach, we were successful in persuading our candidates to remain in the

process - no small feat and a tribute to their conviction and the

integrity of all directly involved.

Upon conclusion of the interviews, the Search Committee met to consider

the qualifications of each of these candidates. This deliberative

process included significant review and discussion of the input received

from the meetings with University stakeholders and culminated in the

Committee's recommendation to forward three candidates to the University

at Albany Council for their consideration. The Council met shortly

thereafter and I am pleased to inform you recommended the same three

candidates to the State University of New York and its Trustees.

I extend my great appreciation and thanks to the Search Committee and to

the representatives of the stakeholders of UAlbany for their tireless

efforts, patience and dedication to our University. We look forward to

the Trustees' decision.

With regards,

Daniel C. Tomson

Chair, Presidential Search Committee
