Conference Tournament Roll Call

Recommended Posts

I don't know much about Binghamton at all (only been there a few times to visit buddies who were in fraternities there), but it sounds like the Holiday Inn is the place to stay at. To the extent that there is an "entertainment district" with bars, restaurants, etc., can anyone reveal to me whether that district within walking distance from the campus/E.C./Holiday Inn?

Admittedly having the tourney in Boston spoiled us so you can take this with a grain of salt.

Maybe there's another, more lively entertainment district somewhere else in Bing than the one we found. We stayed downtown one year and felt like the guy walking through London in 28 Days Later. That was four years or so ago so maybe things have turned around. We ended up driving to Ithaca for something to do.

Hahahahaha! That is my recollection of Binghamton too. Ithaca is nice from what I remember of it. A few years ago, I saw a Cornell hockey game and went out to eat in downtown Ithaca. The Cornell campus is very pretty too. I enjoyed seeing the law school there. Ithaca reminds me of an ultra liberal (first (and only?) U.S. city to elect a socialist mayor, http://today.14850.com/1127bennichols.html) and smaller version of Saratoga Springs.

Schenectady has had a socialist mayor before.

oops, sorry, just so previous post

go to the Texas Roadhouse right across the street from the Binghamton campus. As far as the entertainment district, you have to go into downtown Binghamton. The college bars are The Rat and Sportsbar which is on State Street. There's alot of places around State Street, and Court Street and around the Veterans Memorial Arena. Or you can just crash the frat parties.

To add to what already has been said.

Closest hotel to bingo U is Holiday in across the street. I will be down the street.

Less than 1/2 mile west on the same street is Hampton Inn and Howard Johnson. About 1/2 mile east is Courtyard by Marriott.

Texas Roadhouse also was the closest restaurant. There a few chains on that street (Vestal Parkway). Outback is one I remember to the west. There are also places to eat in or around the mall 3 miles north of Bingo U. The mall north of exit 70 of 170 which is the exit we use to go south to bingo U. I ate at a place in the plaza on the northeast side of the exit last time that was pretty good, but I don't remember its name.

Also if 4 games aren't enough for you, (they may not be for me) there is a Tully's about 1 1/2 miles east. They will have plenty of games on the TVs. Maybe even the maac for those of you that follow LCC also.

So where is everyone sitting at the tourney.. Section 101 - Row H for NYR and myself. Any predictions for the UA turnout on Saturday night? 500, 1000, 1500?

I'd be thrilled with 1,500, but I think more realistically our numbers will be around 500 (hopefully).

Section 101, Row S, I believe, for me ... .

i am annoyed the conference has no video coverage at all for the play-in-game or quarterfinals. Last year in Boston, they had full online coverage of every game, and only 1/2 of it this year.

Let them know that this isn't a good thing. I did by sending emails to some of the people on this page asking why this isn't happening.

The apparent highlight of Binghamton cuisine is a "spiedie" (said speed-ee). I think I may have tried one once, but don't recall it really, so I'll let someone else describe it.

I grew up on Spiedies, so maybe it's my duty to inform others about them. :)

The spiedie: is a dish local to Greater Binghamton in the Southern Tier of New York State, and somewhat more broadly known and enjoyed throughout Central New York state. Spiedie consists of cubes of chicken and pork, but it may also be made from lamb, veal, venison or beef. The meat cubes are marinated overnight or longer (sometimes for as long as two weeks under a controlled environment) in a special spiedie marinade, then grilled carefully on spits over a charcoal pit. The freshly prepared cubes are served on soft Italian bread or a submarine roll, wood skewer and all, then drizzled with fresh marinade. The roll is used as an oven glove to grip the meat while the skewer is removed. Spiedie meat cubes can also be eaten straight off the wooden skewer or can be served in salads, stir fries, and a number of other dishes. The marinade recipe varies, usually involving olive oil, vinegar, and a variety of Italian spices and fresh mint. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiedie

Question for you veteran Dane fans out there -- for those of us driving down to Bingo tomorrow, how much time should I leave myself for driving down to Bingo tomorrow? I've never been to the Events Center, and I haven't been to Binghamton in 10 years or more.

Is there ample parking at the Events Center? I'm a little worried about the weather coming in tonight/tomorrow, but it should be mostly rain.

Binghamton University is about 2 hours and 15 minutes from Albany. Plenty of parking near the arena.

What is the customary number of spiedies that one eats during one sitting? They look kinda small; looks like one of us could pound away 10-15 of those suckers. They look yummy.

I'm not an expert but the ones I've had have been a good size. I don't think I could eat 10 of them anyway. There's a deli up the street from our house that's run by a guy from Bing and he makes them. I used to go in until he hung a Siena sign in his window.

BTW - MsGDG I like your avatar.
