Recruiting - 2023

PG Joel Brown @jabrown_1 , who started 93 games for Cal, has heard from Iona, George Mason, Bakersfield, Albany, & South Dakota. One year remaining

Averaged 7 points and 3 assists for a bad Cal team (but still the Pac 12). Also 93 starts is a ton of experience for the AE.

This would be a nice pick up. Could be a point guard that I guy like Little can learn behind.

I know he was forced into it, but kid started almost every conference game, and showed more hustle than almost any player I've seen in years of following the team. If he will stay with the team as a PWO, then that is awesome, but I like the energy he brings, and I've give him a ship before watching him transfer somewhere. He just watched his brother win a national championship, and I am sure he is motivated to improve and play on a tournament bound team. Hopefully he can achieve that here.

He may not be paying for school...lot's of ways a PWO doesn't pay for school, especially an in-state kid.

Anyone know if Hutch is coming back for his last year of eligibility? Anyone know if Jackson is returning and if he is getting a scholarship? Anyone know if Ketner is returning to the team, or just moving to Football full-time?

Those questions will determine if the team is set for next year, or if we have two more scholarships remaining.

Returning Scholarships: Beagle, Neely, Little, Amica, Reddish

Incoming Freshman: Robinson, Adnan, Margoupis

Incoming Transfers: Betram, Marshall

That's 10 Scholarships of 13 maximum

Questions:

  • Jackson - did he get a scholarship or will he continue as a PWO?
  • Ketner - Returning to the Basketball team after playing football?
  • Hutchinson - Graduating with a year of eligibility remaining. Haven't seen his name entering into the portal

I checked Trey's Instagram account to see if he posted anything about returning or not. Back on March 1, 2023, Trey posted the following comments:

Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.

Ever since I was a kid I dreamed of playing college basketball. I’m so thankful to UAlbany for giving me the opportunity to live that dream out these past 4 years. I have been blessed with so many memories and relationships that have resulted from basketball that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I love this basketball program, I love this University, and I love this place. I will forever be proud to be a Great Dane and will always cherish my time here and everyone who contributed. 💛💜🏀 #purplefam #mentality @ualbany_mbb

Trey has not posted anything since and considering the tone and content of the above message, I have concluded he is moving on to the next phase of his life.

Further, why stick around when you can leave on a high note academically:

Not to beat a dead horse, but Hutch and Amica are the last two connections to Will Brown. One of our complaints about the DK era is the lack of All-Academic team players. Let's see what next year brings.

Congrats Hutch! Great honor!!

Looking at his stats, turn over machine, can't shoot from the outside, offensive efficiency isn't good. Not sure someone that can help but dropping down to the AE is a big step down.

So by my count, this is a full roster if either Hutch stays or Jackson gets a scholarship. If neither of those things happen there is still an open spot.

The other big question is Ketner going to return after playing football? If he does, could he use a football scholarship instead of a basketball scholarship? If either of those things happen there could be another spot as well.

Seems like there could be anywhere from 0 to 2 open slots left.

While I love rooting for a low/mid major team, I do wish there was more local media coverage and more communication from the program giving us info and stuff to follow.

The central Michigan one was reported today. At least thats when the tweet quoted was from.

Sorry, was on my phone posting and wasn't clear. Yep, the CMU kid was yesterday and fits a need, so very relevant.  The two other kids would be steals, and would definitely mean we have two open rides as they play roles where we just picked up Marshall and Bertram.  I think the CAL kid wasn't happening either way.  Spencer would have been interesing.

If we get one or both...my word, we will be playing very small...but HIGHLY athletic and skilled...the way that DK stated he wants to play.  Would be killer if we got Spencer or the Cal Kid.
