Brown to Interview at St Bonaventure

Recommended Posts

I may be wrong but I believe most schools hold the recruits until a replacement coach is named and he gets a chance to meet with the recruits and their families.

Then if the recruit wants out they are usually allowed out but it would be UA's decision.

Regardless of how things are suppose to be or should be recruits pick schools based on their relationship with the coaches.

I think we're putting the cart in front of the horse. We don't know if Brown will like the situation at St Bonnies or if St. Bonnies will offer Coach Brown. There's a feeling out process by both sides during this process.

Whats the typical turnaround for this process, I was thinking by the end of the week they'll have the chance to meet and by middle of next week we'll have a good idea which way this thing is going. Does that sound reasonable?

Your assertion is pretty much correct. The only thing between Olean (and St. Bonaventure) and Jamestown (which Route 17 I-86) that isn't scenery is the Indian casino in Seneca. Buffalo is 75ish miles away (about half of which on local roads), Erie a little longer (all of which Interstate). Somehow that whole region is considered the northernmost part of Appalachia based on socioeconomics and geography and rightfully so, it's seen better days and is way out there. . . .

Do you mean "Salamanca?" The rest of your description seems accurate to me.

Housing is extremely cheap in that area of the state. I'm talking some of the cheapest in the country. Another aspect of the "nothing to do there" idea is that the area is a generally safe, good place to raise a family.

It's generally good and safe, however many towns in that area are falling into the pit of the "rural ghetto" where hopelessness has been on the rise and the rates of substance use and such are quite high. Olean is probably an exception to the rule due to there being an actual population, however most of the people I know from surrounding towns either got out of there after college or hung around and saw their lives decline.

Hey all, I'm new to these posts...GreatDanes83...SQ 79-81, DQ 81-82 and South Allen Street 82-83. Good to be on board. You'll also here occasionally from my 14 year old who is a huge Marmadukes fan.

Okey doke boyz n girlz, it seems well settled..."it is what it is" is totally apt for the situation...rather than obsess on it, let's see where it goes and thank will wherever he is for having the presence, talent and determination to put us Scoobsters on the D-I travel plan. My gut is that he'll be back for at least one more season. He's got some guys he believes in and remember that he got Jamar to honor his commitment when he was being wooed by some bigtime programs. On that note, we may not see another Jamar anytime soon, but we've got some workhorses, some incoming talent and a nice rep...damn, if you guys only knew what it was like back in the day of Kelvin Jones, Winston Royal, John Dieckelman (RIP), Danny Croutier and Potsdam games! These last two years have made me 20 years younger.

Enjoy the rest of the tourney...we'll scratch and claw our way back in 08.

P.S.-I met Jason Siggers dad in Boston. Very cool dude. He intro'd himself as "Ralph" Siggers; Yesterday, I googled Jason and found an online roster from 03-04 at New Mexico Juco, where he was under the name George, not Jason, but had the nickname Jay. And under parents, it listed his dad's name as George, too. Anyone know the story?

Peace all.

We're screwed.

Who would we hire? The assistant Pat Fillen?

YOUTH!!!

G-d...PEOPLE BREATHE!!!

Brown isnt going anywhere yet. He is interviewing. PAR FOR THE COURSE.

He likes Albany...has ties to Albany...and he will eventually go...but just because he is interviewing doesnt mean he is gone.

Believe me, when his time does end at Albany many of us will be reeling, some more than others.

Until that day comes live by a mantra my buddy gave me before I left with a couple of grand, no direction and an open ticket to Europe: IT IS WHAT IT IS. Lose your passport...it happens. Get mugged...it happens. Fall in love and the girl leaves...it happens. Cant find a hostel to stay in, sleep in a train statin....it happens.

IT IS WHAT IT IS.

Dane,

Someone raised the issue of Pat, I simply had a response to that. At first I got nervous then I said to my self.....F it, what ever happens happens. Eventually it will happen so no reason to worry about until we hear that he's leaving. All of this is just part of the game.

Welcome to the board greatdane83! I too am an 1983 grad (DQuad 79-83). The guys you mentioned were a big part of Doc Sauers teams back then and I remember them well since I did not miss a home game in my 4 years at UA. But did I miss something with JD as he was known. You had an RIP next to his name. Please fill me in. You can email me at nysteve661@aol.com if you can.

Ok...i guess I owe an apology...my error was unintentional, but I am sorry if I violated a cardinal rule...my 14 year old caught my post on his computer and told me that Scoobsters (and I guess Marmadukes) are, to put it lightly, frowned upon. No wonder no responses. Since we are big fans and do want to be taken seriously here, let me ask for penance from you all. You guys generate some excellent talk about a passionate topic in my home, UA Hoops. We made it up from NYC for the Bucknell game, out to Binghamton for the game without Will, back to the Capital District for Big Purple Growl night and the AE in Boston (and at Bing last year as well as Philly for UConn. We got snowed in last Friday or we'd have been in Columbus, too). My son's a point guard who actually hopes Will is around to recruit him at the 1 in a few years. And I won't be particularly surprised if he is. He's just got an Albany aura to him. Ever wonder, instead of where Will might go, if he's able to step up the level of our recruits, where we might go down the road...out of the AEC to the???

They call us the Scoobies on the lax forum. I'm not sure how others feel about it but I find it kind of funny.

Couple of stories about Brown and the Bonnies.

Bonnies want to talk to Mahalich - Niagara Gazette

Search for Solomon's replacement continues - Olean Times Herald

It is what it is

an interview...... not an offer

If Coach Brown isn't offered the position, I'm sure other positions will open as the coaching Merry-Go-Round will continue to move as coaches leave other schools to fill vacancies opening other possibilities.

The ball is now in Dr. McElroy's court does he just sit tight or does he reward the Coach for a record 23 wins and a second consecutive AE Tourney Championship and NCAA bid.

Is Brown worth near as much as Wolff at BU is worth(?) or atleast as much as his Siena counterpart?

We should keep a close eye on Brown but we should also keep an eye on Dr. McElroy and see how much he wants to retain Brown.

I don't know if Dr. McElroy can be expected to re-negotiate a contract every year because Coach Brown has other opportunities. What happens if he bumps the salary and the same thing happens next year (or the year after), because it will happen. At some point, he has to say that this is the best that we can offer and it is what it is. I would assume that that conversation happened when they negotiated the current contract.

I certainly want Coach Brown to stay, but you have to be realistic. He will leave as soon as he gets a good opportunity - there is nothing wrong with that. Throwing $25k or $50k at him to keep him isn't going to keep him for more than another year or two - until the better job comes along. That said, maybe the incentives are increased - give him 4 camps instead of two, give him two cars instead of one, give him 1/2 of the incremental revenue for making the tournament, give him a 0 interest loan for his house...

If I were Dr. McElroy, I would only increase the base salary if there was a high level of comfort that one of the assistants would be able to take over the program after Coach Brown eventually leaves. In return for increasing the salary, I would expect a plan on how that assistant would be developed to take over the program.

I know we all love Brown, but there does seem to be just an ever so slight tension between him and Dr. McElroy. I'd love to know what they think of each other when not in front of the microphone.

Let me give a piece of advice to all.

SHUT UP ALREADY. Seriously. As a senior member of this board...and a person who negotiated hundreds of millions of dollars in contracts I FEEL I CAN SAY IT.

You people dont know about relationships between the two.

You people dont know what McElroy can afford.

You people dont know if Will would stay for X dollars for X years.

Etc. Etc.

All your SPECULATION DOES IS:

Fuel McElroy not to negotiate

Fuel Brown to leave

Fuel recruits to fret

Fuel future recruits to move on

Fuel OTHER COACHES FROM WONDERING IF THERE IS A PROBLEM...and what we are willing to pay and why.

Fact is, 20-50k may keep Brown.

Fact is, it may not.

JUST SHUT UP ALREADY AND LET THESE PEOPLE WORK IT OUT.

Messages boards are public...THIS ISNT WATER COOLER CONVERSATION.

You people may be quickening what may be an eventual departure with your public responses.

You think McElroy, Brown, the players, future coaches, and recruits dont read this.

UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON BETWEEN WILL AND THE SCHOOL.....LET IT GO.

When Albany announced plans to move up to DII then DI I wished very much that Doc would remain because I thought he was irreplaceable and that all Dane success would forever be measured against his success.

I only attended one game in the Scott Beeten era (how anyone ever thought a team can win with a coach named, beeten, is beyond me) which gives me such appreciation for what Coach Brown has accomplished. People move on though, and Coach Brown is clearly earning his way toward his own stated career objectives. I personally think St. Boneventure is a basketball graveyard which could actually diminish his stature. A pay raise may be enticing, but two or three ineffective, frustrating years in Olean might derail his plans for a long time. On the other hand, a strong showing with UA in the post-Jamar year would be a much stronger resume builder.

Like anyone who contemplates leaving a secure job for the unknown - its a little frightening and a little exciting. But if you want to grow, you've got to go.

If and when Coach Brown leaves, he will have create excitement at UA which will in turn attract good candidates. We'll be all right.
