Barring injuries, I see a starting five for the 2023-2024 team with the first two or three players off the bench.  I believe the team is moving in the right direction, primarily due to the three portal players + Beagle, Reddish and Jackson.  The incoming freshman are likely battling for playing time.  Staying healthy is going to be important for this team.

While this does involve UAlbany directly, some here pay varying degrees of attention to what is happening to St. Rose.  Further, please do read too much into this, I am not advocating for Will Brown's return.

SAINT ROSE MEN’S BASKETBALL

Beaury back for Golden Knights

Longtime Saint Rose mentor replaces Mike Perno, who steps down

Brian Beaury, who won 643 games in 32 seasons during his first tenure as College of Saint Rose men’s basketball coach, is back in that role, the school announced Tuesday.

Mike Perno said he was “disheartened” with the direction that college basketball is taking.

Brian Beaury, 62, said he feels like a much younger man after a life-changing medical diagnosis.

The College of Saint Rose announced Tuesday Perno resigned as head men’s basketball coach and is being replaced by Beaury, who begins his second stint. Beaury won 643 games with the Golden Knights over 32 seasons before retiring in 2018 for health reasons.

Beaury rejoined Saint Rose in March as an associate head coach working under Perno.

“I wish we were starting practice tomorrow,” Beaury said. “I feel like I’ve been given a brand-new opportunity and I’ve got the energy I had when I was 25 years old when I started this job.”

Perno, 45, said he wanted to try a different career path, possibly in teaching, and spend more time with his sons, who are entering eighth and third grade. The Golden Knights went 9-20 last season and saw their best player, forward Shane O’Dell of Schalmont, transfer to Division I Stonehill.

Perno said his “heart’s not into it right now” and he had trouble picturing himself having to recruit a new team every year because of the transfer portal.

“I sat down with my wife and talked about other options,” said Perno, who spent five seasons as head coach and 12 years as Beaury’s assistant before that. “I’m kind of disheartened with the state college basketball is in. It wasn’t anything that transpired that made me step away specifically, but I just felt like I just need a change. The whole transfer portal thing was disheartening and my kids are growing up a little bit now. I’d like a chance to watch them play and do things.”

Beaury said this will give him a chance to conclude his coaching career on his own terms. He missed the 2014-15 and 2017-18 seasons due to medical reasons while Perno handled the day-today coaching duties.

About six months after his retirement, Beaury visited Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, defined by Johns Hopkins as a type of arthritis that causes inflammation in certain parts of the spine. Researchers believe genetics plays a role.

Beaury, who underwent 10 surgeries in the previous decade, went on medication.

“I felt 20 years younger,” he said. “I felt healthy enough to go back to some normalcy in life.”

Beaury served as an assistant coach under Will Brown with the Albany Patroons of The Basketball League in 2021-22. Then he joined Saint Rose with the idea of helping out Perno.

Now it’s Beaury’s show again. In his previous tenure as head coach, he guided the Golden Knights to NCAA Division II Elite Eight appearances in 1996, 1998 and 1999.

“It’s our goal and our vision to be a championship team next year,” he said. “We’re building an entire roster that I think can compete for a championship.”

Beaury said he already has commitments from nine recruits for next season, including five transfers — four from Division I programs. He’s also trying to schedule exhibitions with Siena and the University at Albany.

Saint Rose athletic director Lori Anctil said Beaury was the first person she called after she took the job in 2019.

“I didn’t know him personally before I started here, but I knew everything about him,” Anctil said. “That he was synonymous not only with Saint Rose basketball but Saint Rose in general. I wanted to connect with him right away and we did. We’ve developed a friendship ever since. We have so much respect for each other.”

Speaking of Will Brown, does he have a job yet?

If he is working, whether in a basketball or outside basketball position, he has no made announcement to my knowledge.

As seen on the AE Board:

Albany F Tairi Ketner has entered the transfer portal. http://verbalcommits.com/players/tairi-ketner

I haven't paid attention to the football team as I have lost all interest (and cancelled my season seats) with them being so terrible for so long. Does this mean he didn't make that team?

I would say yes.

Likely he’s not playing football.  They brought in a kid from Charlotte to go along with the four they have.

I spoke briefly with Dwayne Killings at the WLAX send-off.  He stated that the transfer portal has presented unique challenges.  Dwayne stated he and his assistant coaches are making sure the team is prepared for next season.  Dwayne appeared concern about the impact of last season on the fan base. During our discussion, Jonathan Beagle interjected the team will get the job done.

The personnel that we have at start of the season is going to have to carry us, like them or not.  The 2023-2024 team has many new faces, and I would bet the 2024-2025 team will also have many new faces, however Killings will be with us.

I have seen Tairi Ketner, on campus, during the spring sports season.  He looked like he had "checked-out".

I don't know how you could possibly make that distinction. Most college students look checked out because they eat junk food and sleep 4hrs a night 🤣😂. I was one within the last decade.

Perhaps, because I have seen Jonathan Beagle and Marcus Jackson couple times recently, at Baseball (Bruno Stadium) and at WLAX send-off ... spoken to Jonathan twice and Marcus once, they give off a completely different vibe, that "we are sticking around for now" and we care about our other student athlete's vibe plus Beagle and Jackson are working out daily,

Sometimes, you can judge a book by its cover.  You might be wrong, or you might be right on spot.

Let's see where Ketner ends up.   I wish him the best in all his future student-athletic endeavors.

Lastly, now in retirement I glad that stuck around the Albany area.  I have taken advantage of the free UAlbany sporting events.  You get the opportunity to meet parents, athletes and coaches across all our programs.  From this group, I draw on the prospect of better days in our athletic programs and in our society in general.

I don't think we'll have better days until the school administration cleans house in the athletic administration. They've had years to prove they are up to the task and have failed miserably. They didn't capitalize on LAX success or MBB success in the least.

Delaware transfer Gianmarco Arletti has committed to Albany.

Yawn.

36% from the field, 28% from 3...junior guard...WHY? Who recruits a kid that shoots 36% from the field and 28% from three. Brutal!

EDIT: He did shoot it much better year prior to this. And appears to be a bit of a freak athlete.
