UA Men's Basketball Coach Search

If Benson is as bad as most are saying on this Board, it will be Bryant Stith 8 year assistant at Old Dominion.

It's not my favorite but he was a hell of a college player.  Played in the NBA. And had been an assistant for 8 years on some pretty good teams. I would not dismiss him right out of the blue.

What about going for a good international head coach that wants to make a splash in the NCAA for a few years before getting a higher conference job? I'm not sure how much international coaches make, but I'm betting you could attract one from a decent league with ambition. The Albany job has a lot going for it for the right person, even if it's a pay cut. Top 60 media market in the country, relatively easy path the a NCAA tournament, and a clear rebuild case of a team that went to three straight not all that long ago. Some quick success could propel to a higher job quickly. Getting someone a higher job quickly makes the job more attractive for the next coach. While I loved having a consistent program, if done right this is the opportunity to grow to a destination spot. We will never grow to an ACC program level payroll as a state institution, so hiring coaches on the way up needs to be the plan.

Is this real? Is this some sort of state mandate? Why would they list this job on there like that?

You can list state jobs in public websites. But what's odd is that it's not posted here:  https://statejobs.ny.gov/public/vacancyTable.cfm?searchResults=Yes&Keywords=&title=&JurisClassID=&AgID=530&minDate=&maxDate=&employmentType=&grade=&SalMin= or here https://www.suny.edu/careers/employment/index.cfm?s=

But if staff aren't following the normal processes that their personnel office requires you know I wouldn't put it past them to screw that up lol

Article in the record stated there has been good interest in the coaching position.

 https://dailygazette.com/2021/03/06/benson-ualbany-has-received-tremendous-interest-regarding-mens-basketball-coaching-position/

A couple of quotes I found interesting:

Benson said UAlbany is not using a search firm in seeking its next head coach. Someone who brings “excitement” and “positive energy” to the program that is coming off three consecutive losing seasons are valued commodities, but Benson said the department is not setting rigid requirements ahead of fully diving into the process of finding Brown’s successor.

“We’re going to leave the compensation package, generally, where it is,” Benson said.

He said he expects the next UAlbany men’s basketball head coach to be offered a five-year contract, the maximum number of years allowed under SUNY rules.

So Mark Benson office us knee deep in resumes and letters of interest....so who is reading, sorting and prioritizing all this paperwork.....at our level .... you will see current or former D1 coaches & assistants, throw in some D2 & D3 for good measure (remember UVM took a chance on a D3 coach recently).....lastly some Junior College coaches ... Benson is in over his head......or Mark Benson is just blowing smoke.....just remember the mess we found ourselves in 20 + years ago

“When we’re looking at it, it would be great if the person had coaching experience at the mid-major level, or a higher level,” Benson said. “Someone who has been at a few different places to see what works best, and bring it here. It doesn’t have to be a sitting head coach or a former head coach.” -Daily Gazette

Sounds like he has someone in mind. Then he won't need to go through all those resumes and paperwork. Specific to say they have been a few places and doesn't have to be a head coach. Sounds like an assistant that has moved around a bit.

A good chance that you are correct, Benson is smoke screening the fact he has predetermined the outcome by saying what he is not actual doing....  the fact he is not using a national search service is interesting.... particularly when you want to get this right ....

Or the budget is depleted as to why they aren’t and can’t pay a $400k a year for a coach.

Firing a coach while the university is having financial problems probably doesn't put you in a great position in terms of offering more pay to a new coach. That might have been something he should have thought about last week.

Firing a coach who was popular in the community and who many alumni/fans wanted to keep probably pissed off and alienated some of your donors. That might have been something he should have thought about last week.

It's a fairly open secret that our AD is looking for another job. The game is, the same search firms that place ADs also place coaches. So, by firing the basketball coach, you get to hire the search firm that might place you in AD job. That might make the search firm happy and they might recommend you for the AD job you really want. I'm actually glad someone might have stepped in and said no to the search firm racket.

It seems like it would be tough to hire a guy with previous D1 coaching experience because:

1. if they've been winning, they're probably going to go higher than us to something that pays more.

2. If they're a retread former head coach like say Geno Ford at Stony Brook or Cliff Warren who coached for 9 years and has a below 500 career winning percentage, someone might ask why you fired a guy who has a career winning percentage and 5 NCAA tournament apperances for someone with a losing record.

True, but as others said Benson shouldn’t be trusted either lol. He used the word generally which can easily mean incentives all over the place in the contract which Brown no longer had. It’s also not on the smart side to tell the media directly that they’re going to go on the cheaper side for a new coach as you want to get as much interest possible.

Makes you wonder why some other D1 school has scoop the person up...how many different places does have to be.... and the phase "see what works best"  something that works with one group of players may not work with another... Benson never been on the front line of coaching... at times he just repeating things he has heard elsewhere ... just blowing smoke

I know the picture below has nothing to do with UAlbany however; there are some "Dukies" feeling poorly today....for us and the "Dukies" ... this will pass... even Coach K can have an off year...
